While it is important to look for the strengths which lie beneath the surface of many ADHD behaviour's it is important to also understand what ADHD is and some coping mechanisms.

Here is some high level information for anyone just learning about their own diagnosis.

- Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition

- Characterized by symptoms that include difficulty maintaining attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior.

- These symptoms can lead to various challenges in daily life, such as unstable relationships, poor performance in work or school settings, and low self-esteem.

- Research suggests that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly beneficial, helping individuals develop skills to reduce the impact of ADHD symptoms on their lives.

- Additionally, medication and support groups are valuable resources for managing ADHD. Understanding and recognizing the signs of ADHD in adults is crucial for seeking appropriate care and improving overall well-being.

Coping strategies for adults with ADHD are diverse and can be tailored to each individual's needs.

To provide a framework that helps manage symptoms it is helpful to structure your environment to suit you:
- Reduce distractions
- Use planners or digital tools to stay organized,
- Set up routines
- Mindfulness and meditation may also be beneficial, aiding in focus and emotional regulation.
- Breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps and use of timers to maintain productivity can be effective.

It's important to recognize personal strengths and leverage them while also seeking support from professionals or peer groups when needed.

Developing coping strategies is a dynamic process, and what works for one person may not work for another, so it's crucial to find the methods that best suit your lifestyle and challenges.

We get raised being told off so much we believe we will do the wrong thing or won't be good enough or will fail. Then we do self destructive behaviours because we don't have faith in ourselves. Be kind to yourself - you are better than you have been made to believe.

The hardest thing about parenting is knowing when not to!

Basically, don't intervene too much.

It's important to give children room to make their own mistakes and learn from them, but also provide support and guidance when needed. It's a delicate balance that requires patience, understanding, and good communication with your children. It's natural to want to protect and shield our children from harm, but it's also important to give them the space to learn and grow on their own.

Remember to be a reliable source of support and guidance, but also respect their autonomy and trust them to make the right choices.

Here are some general tips on coaching your own ADHD teenager. Keep in mind that every teenager with ADHD is unique, and what works for one may not work for another.

1. Communicate openly and honestly.
Adolescents with ADHD may struggle with impulsivity, disorganization, and forgetfulness. Encourage your teenager to talk with you about their challenges, and work together to come up with solutions. Set weekly or daily check-ins to review their progress and offer support.

2. Prioritize structure and routine. Establish consistent routines for sleep, meals, and homework to help your teenager manage their time and stay on track. Make sure your teen has a designated study space that's quiet and organized. Help them break larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.

3. Encourage physical activity.
Physical exercise has been shown to improve focus and reduce symptoms of ADHD. Encourage your teenager to engage in regular exercise and outdoor activities

4. Find what interests them.
Whatever topic they are studying or activity you want them to undertake, make sure they are interested and connected to the outcome. Note that their interest level will change so keep checking in and finding new ways to boost their interest.

5. Focus on the positive.
Your teen is amazing, they want to succeed, so encourage them and remind them of all their strengths and reward even small, positive behaviours.
