🌏 Upcoming Seminar | New consumers in the global south: Consumption practices and aspirations among the former urban poor of Metro Manila

This seminar offers a transnational examination of how global economic development has transformed consumption, identity, and culture among a group we describe as the former urban poor.

Drawing on the book "New Consumers in the Global South: No Longer Poor, Not Yet Middle Class", this seminar takes a transnational perspective and traces how consumption practices and aspirations are evolving across cities including Metro Manila, Guangzhou, Mexico City, and Rio de Janeiro.

With a particular focus on Metro Manila, the discussion will explore how shifting patterns of consumption intersect with social mobility, wellbeing, and identity, and what this reveals about broader transformations in global economic and cultural life.

🎤 Speakers

Anna Cristina Pertierra (University of Technology Sydney) is an anthropologist and cultural studies scholar whose work spans urban ethnography, consumption, and media across Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu (Ateneo de Manila University) is a leading scholar on knowledge mobilisation, social development, and responsible consumption, with a strong focus on applied social science engagement.

Last Wednesday, 25 March, the ANU Philippines Institute hosted three important events:

Philippine-Australian relations from 2016 to the Present

An online webinar was hosted in time for the 80th anniversary of Australia-Philippines relations that discussed former Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Amanda Gorely's diplomatic career and the importance of integrating gender considerations into foreign policy, chaired by ANU Philippines Institute PhD Representative Athena Charanne Presto.

ANU Philippines Institute Meeting with Young Political Leaders Delegation

A meeting was held with young Filipino political leaders and members and affiliates of the ANU Philippines Institute. The visit is part of a program by the Australian Political Exchange Council (AusPol) and the delegation included the following officials: Calamba City Province of Laguna Congresswoman Charisse Hernandez, Province of Iloilo Vice Governor Nathalie Ann Debuque, Municipality of Talavera, Nueva Ecija Mayor Aries Vincent Patrick Lim, Province of Albay Board Member Sheina Onrubia-Dela Cruz, and City of San Juan Councilor Lorenzo Francisco Tanada-Yam.

The ICC Case of Rodrigo Duterte and Its International Justice Implications

The lecture was given by leading human rights lawyer and law reformer in the Philippines, Neri Colmenares, who discussed issues surrounding the ICC case against former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte and how the case is a key platform for accountability and justice for victims of Duterte's war on drugs. The discussant for the lecture was Ross Tugade, doctoral researcher at the University of New South Wales and an ANU Philippines Institute affiliate.

The ANU Philippines Institute continues to facilitate important dialogue between Australia and the Philippines through these events, grounded in academic rigour and timely policy input. We thank everyone who has joined us and participated in these events.

📣 Announcing our latest policy brief!

We are proud to share that Issue 3, No. 1 of the ANU Philippines Institute Policy Brief series, "Tanaw," by Dr. Anne Gene Broomhall, A/Prof Suzanne Cosh, Dr Belinda Flannery, Prof Susan C. Wilson, Dist. Prof Kim Usher, Prof Maria Lourdes Q. Baybay, and Dr Rachel Laureano is now accessible on our website ⬇️

🔹 The article analyses the relationship between lived experiences of climate change—particularly flooding—and behavioural engagement among Filipinos, with a focus on waste management practices. It emphasises how improper waste disposal and plastic pollution exacerbate flood severity, reinforcing the localised impacts of climate change in vulnerable communities.

🔹 The recommendations provided in the article highlight behaviourally informed strategies such as 1) using targeted anti-littering signage that explicitly links improper rubbish disposal to flood risks, rather than only discouraging littering without context, 2) promoting alternatives to harmful plastics and phase out environmentally detrimental single-use plastic packaging, 3) framing communication to emphasise shared responsibility and collaboration, and 4) engaging higher-income Filipinos in climate mitigation efforts for a more well-rounded societal approach.
