Some of the most important people in a child's life go by many beloved names—nanny, pop, gramps, granny and every name in between—and this morning we welcomed the Grandparents, Godparents and Grandfriends of our Year 3 students for our annual GGG Day.

It was a heartwarming morning attended by over 100 members of our extended Year 3 families, made for sharing a small slice of the school day with the people who mean the most. Guests settled in over morning tea before our students took to their feet to perform two songs they'd been busy preparing, filling the Junior School Hall with music. There was even a glimpse of what's to come in Year 4, with a recording of our award-winning Wakakirri performance offering a taste of the fun that lies ahead.

A heartfelt thank you to the Gabriel Foundation for their generous funding of this annual event, and to the staff for their dedication and effort that goes into organising this enriching experience for our students and their GGGS!

Recycleman flew into our ELC this week, cape and all, and the children were hooked from the start.🦸

Part superhero, part teacher, Recycleman spent the afternoon showing the ELC students how reducing, reusing and recycling can be genuinely fun. Cue games, dress-ups and hands-on sorting. The children talked through what belongs in the correct bins, then pulled on their own green capes to try it for themselves. Recycleman scattered 'garbage' across the classroom, and off they went, sorting every piece into the right bin.

Somewhere in the middle of all the fun, they picked up something that sticks: small daily habits add up to a big difference for our planet.

Year 10's Millie rowed for CGGS at the 2026 Oceania and Australian Beach Sprint Championships, and she's been outstanding!‍ And her crowning result? She has qualified to represent Australia at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, held from 31 October.

Millie’s medals across the regatta:
U17 Women's Beach Sprint 1x
U19 Women's Beach Sprint 2x
U19 Mixed Beach Sprint 4x+
4th—U19 Women's Beach Sprint 1x

Charlotte (Year 12) also raced at the championships, competing under Sydney Rowing Club. She partnered with Millie for Gold in the U19 Women's 2x and the U19 Mixed 4x+. Overall, Millie's results took CGGS to second place on the medal table, a standout finish across the championships! From here, Millie will be wearing Australia’s colours in Senegal this October.

We had some special visitors at Canberra Girls G-RAM-mar School last week! 🐏

On Friday 11 September, the NFL will play its first-ever regular season game in Australia. The Los Angeles Rams are one of the teams competing, and to build momentum, their cheerleading squad dropped in at the Junior School on the first stop of their itinerary.

They performed a cheer routine, then handed the floor over to teach everyone their moves. Rampage, the Rams mascot, joined in too!

No student expected to learn an NFL routine before recess. But there they were, front and centre, picking up choreography on the fly and going for it.

Following another joyful Senior School Swimming Carnival, we celebrate the story of the CGGS Swimming Centre for this week's Heritage to Horizon, a facility that exists because an entire community fought for it.

For decades, CGGS had no pool of its own. From 1931, students swam their carnivals at the Canberra Swimming Pool (later named Manuka Pool), sharing the day with Canberra Grammar School. By the 1960s, the carnival had moved to Civic Pool—a home of their own was still years away.

That changed when an Appeal was launched by a group of committed community members at the start of 1995. The response was immediate and wide-reaching, with support drawn from every part of the School as the Gabriel Foundation, the Parents' & Friends' Association and the Old Grammarians' Association each gave generously to fund a swimming pool of our own. Across seven months of construction, the Swimming Centre took shape, and it was finished almost exactly on schedule, ready for students on 22 January 1996. On 29 February 1996, an audience of 450 gathered in the Gymnasium for the official opening, where the plaque was unveiled, the pools were blessed and swimmers dived straight in.

Today, that same spirit carries on. From elite competitors training before dawn, to Junior School students in their first lessons, the Centre welcomes swimmers of every ability and level of enthusiasm, a legacy of the community that built it.

Our Senior School Swimming Carnival was a splash hit!🏊

The stands were packed and the cheers loud, before the first race even started. Students displayed exceptional performances in butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and relays with House spirit running high. Our swimmers and spectators racked up points in all kinds of ways—some leading the chanting charge, while others rolled up their sleeves to help staff run the day. Every bit of it counted 🙌

Each House brought its own theme and the students showed up for it—from face paint to floaties to fluffy dressing gowns and of course, their full House colours.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers who hosted another joyful day!

"When people connect across cultures and experiences, learning flows both ways. That mutual understanding is what makes partnerships like these so powerful." These were the words of David Smith MP, who welcomed our Solomon Islands Immersion group to Parliament House this week.

Drawing on their recent experience, students from CGGS and Marist College Canberra shared their ideas with Mr Smith on how Australia can continue to support the Solomon Islands. All contributed thoughtful perspectives and engaged in genuine discussion about international partnerships and development.

The conversation highlighted how the Service Learning opportunities at CGGS empower our students to think critically about global issues, confidently take their seat amongst Australia’s decision makers and take positive action.

Service Learning is a key pillar of Cygnus at CGGS, our comprehensive co-curricular program, that combines academic learning with meaningful community service. Across a century, generations have co-created a lasting legacy of performing arts at CGGS. We have waited 100 years for their stories, their voices and their music to converge on one stage.

On Saturday night Llewellyn Hall lit up with the shared history of 200+ performers—voices spanning our epic past and our hope-filled future—brought together for the Centenary Gala Concert.

And it was worth waiting for.

A standing ovation honoured the students, staff and Grammarian performers who gifted the School, and Canberra, a showcase of vibrant narrative, bold sound and dynamic presence:

🎹 Golgotha, adapted from a hymn by the Community of the Sisters of the Church, composed by Dr Jennifer Game (Class of 1982).
🎻 A phenomenal violin performance from soloist Ziqi (Year 12), Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
🎺 A big-band rendition of Waltzing Matilda.
🎶 The world premiere of our new School song, Generations, composed by Sally Whitwell (Class of 1991).

None of it possible without Wyana O’Keeffe, the concert’s Artistic Director and CGGS Head of Bands, whose unwavering creative vision, dedication and passion for music and performance gave us all an unforgettable, once-in-a-generation event.

Thank you to each and every person (both on the stage and behind the scenes) for their performance of a lifetime.

Quelle belle journée!

French Immersion Day landed at the Junior School last week and every corner of the campus experienced a French twist.👩🏻‍🎨

In Art classes, students studied Monet's Water Lilies, P.E. learned about pétanque, Music and Science each took a French turn and the Library ran a photo booth that saw plenty of smiles. Pastoral Care then wound down with French-inspired craft. Magnifique!

Then came the crêpes. Le Petit Breton pulled up on site and made a fresh one for every single student—a lot of crêpes, and by all accounts, not a single complaint.

The day closed with an assembly held entirely in French, featuring a folk dance group who brought energy and flair.

It's the first French Immersion Day at the Junior School—and going by how the day unfolded, it won't be the last.
