Sydney University Medical Society - SUMS

Sydney University Medical Society - SUMS Australia's oldest medical student society, since 1886. Representative body for all USYD MD students

Welcome to the Sydney University Medical Society (SUMS) page! Our Society has a long and proud history, with foundations beginning in 1886, making us Australia’s oldest medical student society. We have over 1,200 students within the School, with local students joining peers from across Australia and the world who are drawn to Sydney Medical School for its reputation as an institution of e

xcellence. The Society functions for you - we run social events like the annual MedBall, academic functions such as the revered Lambie Dew Oration, advocate to Faculty about curriculum change, and run seminars to fill in those gaps in your learning.

It would be incredible for anyone who is free on the night to show up for a beautiful night of piano, which Josh began at the ripe age of 4. With any luck, we will have a lifetime of beautiful music to look forward to!

Celebrating 25 years of hard work and planetary health advocacy with Doctors for the Environment Australia.🌍

It was a privilege to attend the DEA 25th Anniversary Gala last Friday 24th April and reflect on how far planetary health has come. Planetary health is inextricably linked to human health, and ongoing advocacy has helped establish it as an important part of medical education and healthcare conversations.

Sydney Medical School and SUMS are proud to support planetary health advocacy while recognising there is always more work to be done.

Interested in getting involved? Sign up for DEA student membership at just $5 for your entire degree!

https://www.dea.org.au/student_membership

Looking forward to more initiatives to come in the planetary health space!😁

SULS, SUAEA, and SUMS are thrilled to announce the inaugural Tri-Society Blood Drive!

The Sydney University Law Society, Sydney University Medical Society and Sydney University Engineering Undergraduate Association will go head-to-head to see who can get the most donations. From 4 April to 31 December, we’ll be hosting a blood donation challenge in partnership with Lifeblood Australia.🩸

Winning society can claim bragging rights and possibly an open bar tab at our tri-soc mixer at the end of the year!

What are you waiting for - join the Facebook group now: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1CYN47G5oH/

This group will be used for information, ranking updates, and some friendly competition. This is a great opportunity to donate blood, plasma or platelets whether it’s your first donation or your regular donation. If you’re unable to donate - encouraging friends and family to sign up to your Lifeblood team is another great way to advocate for a great cause.

Make sure you read the instructions carefully when signing up in order for your donation to count! Everyone who donates will go into a draw to win merch from their respective societies!

There are many donation centres spread through Sydney, to find out which is the closest to you, head to: https://my.donateblood.com.au/app/appointments/location

As an added bonus, any groups of 4+ who would like to donate at the Marrickville Donor Centre will be supplied with a cab voucher to go to the Centre. Please contact your respective leaders at the below emails to receive a voucher:
