Today, Study Cairns will be taking part in the Cairns 2026 Grand Parade, providing international students with an opportunity to participate in a major community celebration and showcase the cultural diversity of our international student community.

Students joining the Study Cairns parade group are encouraged to represent their cultures through national flags, cultural attire and shared experiences, while connecting with fellow students and the wider Cairns community.

With the Cairns 2026 Grand Parade taking place tomorrow, Study Cairns is inviting students, education providers, and the wider community to participate in this significant community celebration.

The Study Cairns parade group will provide students with an opportunity to represent their cultures, connect with fellow students and engage with the broader Cairns community.

Students are encouraged to bring a national flag, wear something that represents their culture, or attend and support the celebration alongside students from around the world.

This week, the Student Hub welcomed another group of international students as they commenced their studies in Cairns.

The orientation provided an opportunity for students to familiarise themselves with local services, support networks and the broader student community, while gaining practical information to help them settle into life in Cairns and Australia.

It was encouraging to see students actively engaging throughout the session, connecting with peers and building an understanding of the resources available to support their wellbeing, participation and successful transition into study and community life.

The Student Hub remains committed to supporting international students throughout their time in Cairns and strengthening connections between students, education providers, support services and the wider community.

We look forward to continuing to engage with and support our international student community as they progress through their studies.

🇮🇩 Celebrating Indonesian Culture and Community in Cairns!
Study Cairns was delighted to be invited by the Cairns Indonesian-Australian Association Inc. (CIAA) to take part in the celebration of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day this August.
A big thank you to Astri, President of CIAA, and the wider Indonesian community for welcoming us and including Study Cairns in such a special celebration.
We were particularly delighted to connect Indonesian international students studying in Cairns with their local Indonesian community, giving students an opportunity to celebrate their culture, meet new people and strengthen their sense of connection and belonging while studying away from home.
The day was filled with traditional Indonesian food, music and cultural performances, including the beautiful Nusantara Dance performance, showcasing Indonesian culture through movement, music and teamwork.
Cairns is home to students and communities from around the world, and occasions like this demonstrate the important role our local multicultural communities play in welcoming and connecting international students.
Congratulations to Astri, CIAA and everyone involved in bringing the celebration together. Thank you for inviting Study Cairns to be part of the day and for continuing to share Indonesian culture with the wider Cairns community.

🇯🇵🇦🇺 Strengthening Cairns–Minami Sister City Connections
Study Cairns was delighted to be part of the official welcome for students and delegates from our Sister City, Minami, Japan, during their visit to Cairns.
Hosted at Cairns Regional Council, the welcome brought together Mayor Amy Eden, Cairns Regional Councillors and the Council Executive Team, alongside representatives from our Japanese and Cairns communities.
During the welcome, we were pleased to hear from Mayor Amy Eden, Mr Shingo Higashimoto, Head of the Consular Office of Japan in Cairns, and the Mayor of Minami, celebrating the longstanding friendship between our two communities.

Cairns and Minami share a Sister City relationship dating back to 1969, with student and community exchanges continuing to play an important role in strengthening these connections.

For Study Cairns, these student visits are particularly important. They create opportunities not only for cultural exchange and friendship, but also for young people from Minami to experience Cairns as an education destination and discover future pathways to study in our region.

We were delighted to be part of the welcome and look forward to continuing to strengthen the education and community connections between Cairns and Minami. 🇦🇺🤝🇯🇵

🌏 Student Ambassador Update | Connecting international students with the Cairns community

The 2026/2027 International Student Ambassador Program continues to provide opportunities for student leaders to build connections, develop their skills and become more involved in the Cairns community.

As part of the ongoing program, the ambassadors recently connected with FNQ Young Rotaract at the Study Cairns Student Hub. The event introduced students to local volunteering opportunities, community projects and a network of young people passionate about making a positive difference across Far North Queensland.

Experiences like this provide valuable opportunities to strengthen leadership and communication skills, expand local networks and gain a deeper understanding of the organisations and opportunities available to international students in the region.

Our ambassadors are also supporting preparations for the Cairns Festival Parade on 29 August, providing another opportunity to contribute to a major community event and represent the diversity and enthusiasm of Cairns' international student community.

Together, these experiences are helping student leaders build confidence, make meaningful connections and play an active role in the wider Cairns community.

We look forward to seeing the continued contribution of the 2026/2027 Student Ambassadors throughout the year! 💙

Meet our Student Ambassador Laila

Study Cairns is pleased to introduce Laila, one of our Student Ambassadors representing the diverse and talented international student community in Cairns.

Originally from Mauritius, Laila completed her secondary education with a focus on Travel and Tourism, including a certified project in agritourism. She was also awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Physical Education for her discipline, commitment, and performance.

Laila has since transitioned into the community and healthcare sector in Australia. She has completed a Certificate IV in Ageing Support and is currently studying a Diploma of Community Services.

Alongside her studies, Laila works in Clinical Assistance, providing person-centred care that supports residents’ independence, dignity, and wellbeing. Her experience across aged care, hospitality, and support services has enabled her to develop valuable skills in teamwork, adaptability, and quality care.

Laila’s commitment to the aged care sector was recognised with the OzHeart Award 2025, which acknowledged her compassion, dedication, and meaningful contribution to resident wellbeing. More recently, she has achieved another significant professional milestone by securing employer sponsorship, reflecting the skills, work ethic, and value she brings to her workplace and the sector.

Through the Student Ambassador program, Laila contributes to strengthening connections across Cairns’ international education community by sharing her experiences, supporting fellow students, and highlighting the study and career pathways available in Australia.

Looking ahead, Laila plans to continue her studies in nursing and further specialise within the healthcare sector.

We look forward to following Laila’s journey and seeing her continue to inspire and connect with students while representing the welcoming, diverse, and supportive spirit of Cairns.

Connecting, learning and building confidence in Cairns!

Tomorrow, we’re bringing international students together for our FREE English Conversation & Student Networking Session at the Student Hub.

Facilitated by our wonderful Student Ambassadors, Saki and Stanka, the session will allow students to practise their conversational English, meet fellow international students, and hear first-hand experiences of working while studying and balancing study, work, and life in Cairns.

These sessions are more than just English practice — they’re about helping students build confidence, create connections and feel more engaged in the Cairns community.

Cairns Bon Festival – Happening Today 🇯🇵

The Cairns Bon Festival is taking place today at Fogarty Park, providing international students with a great opportunity to experience Japanese culture and engage with the local community.

The free community event will feature Japanese food, cultural performances, live music and the traditional Bon dance.
