The UTMOST project is an upgrade of the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), the largest steerable telescope in the Southern hemisphere which is a collaborative effort of Swinburne University of Technology, University of Sydney, Australian National University and the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO)

Science drivers for the upgrade are our BURST, MAP and TIM

E projects. BURST will search for Fast Radio Bursts, which are bright, very short flashes of radio energy of completely unknown origin. The MAP project aims to increase the telescope's mapping sensitivity in a field of view of about 1 square degree. The TIME project aims to do timing measurements for many dozens of pulsars every day.

Work has started on the ends of North-South arm for the UTMOST-2D upgrade at Molonglo. We had a beautiful day for our crane visit -- clear skies, not too hot and not windy. One of the outrigger antennas is being positioned at the far end of the South arm in this shot. The drought is certainly showing!

An FRB with three components found at Molonglo in Oct 2018. A beauty! Five new FRBs detected with our real-time, machine learning-based algorithms have been found in a 344 day survey of the southern skies. See http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/research/utmost/?p=1603
