Dandelion Childcare and Early Learning Centre explored different experiences during National Reconciliation Week. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Dandelion Childcare and Early Learning Centre celebrated National Simultaneous Story time in May.
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously around Australia. National Simultaneous Storytime is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading, using an Australian children's book.
This year, the book was Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker, published by Scholastic (2023).
Bowerbird Blues is a beautiful story about a lonely satin bowerbird’s search for blue things. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts an olive-green female satin bowerbird and the blue bowerbird realises what he has been searching for all along.

Adventurous Play

Dandelion Childcare and ELC encourage all ages to develop a skill of adventure and risky play. Educators support and guide children to learn about themselves, about others and about their place in the world. Children develop a sense of self-worth as they start believing in their own abilities and start to trust their decision-making.

As part of the early literacy and community program. The children went for a walk to our local Bulleen Library. During our walk the children and educators had the opportunity to discuss road safety and the importance of looking both ways before crossing. They explored different signs and the meaning of them at different pedestrian crossings. We met our local neighbours and explored the different coloured leaves on trees.
The children were reminded to use their soft voices as we walked into the library, where they explored books and literature around them. Some of the children were interested in picture stories and others were focused on children’s history books exploring archaeology and the things that have been found in the past. The children helped to sign up for a library card and used the kiosk to check out their books before saying goodbye to all the lovely staff at the Bulleen library.

Early Literacy - Charlie’s Shell

As part of the Dandelion Childcare and ELC School readiness Program we had a very special visitor from the Bulleen Library. Karina introduced the children to a Library and what you can find at our local library. As part of the program the children joined in on a song of a Ram Sam Sam to move our bodies to help us focus before we used and embraced a story written by Marina Zlatanova, "Charlie's Shell"

Charlie the snail is taunted by three passing slugs. Charlie looks different, he has a big shell on his back. Bewildered and upset, Charlie has a very clever idea - to discard his once-beloved shell so he too could look like a slug. Alas! Being bare is not as easy as it seems. Painful sunburn, pelting hailstones, prickly brambles and a swooping magpie are just some of the many misfortunes to befall a helpless shell-less snail! A snail tale with an important message at the heart - to appreciate the shell you're in!

Anzac Biscuits Lest we forget.

This week we honoured the brave men and women who have served our country. On ANZAC Day, we pay tribute to their courage and dedication on this day.

The children read stories about Anzac Day, one of the stories provided opportunities to learn about the significance of Anzac Day and Australian history and Culture. This was then followed up by making biscuits. The children helped by measuring, pouring and stirring the ingredients. The children were able to explore measurement and capacity through weighing and pouring the different ingredients in the mixing bowl.

Chalk painting - Learning about colour mixing

The children explored marking, drawing & painting on the walls outside with chalk and water. This brought an exciting twist to a sensory experience while exploring with different mediums in the outdoor environment. The children explored different textures the chalk made, when mixed with the water on the concrete wall and investigated the difference it made when soaked in a bucket of water. The children noticed the chalk became slimy like paint and continued with marking the walls, drawing shapes and tracing themselves to decorate their outlines smearing the colours with their hands.
