The 12 Sacred Names of Ganesha in Odissi
In Hindu tradition, the Dwadasha Nama (Twelve Names of Ganesha) are chanted to invoke wisdom, auspicious beginnings, inner strength, and the removal of obstacles. Each name reveals a different aspect of Ganesha's divine nature.
Through Odissi, these sacred qualities come alive. Using hand gestures (mudras), facial expression (abhinaya), and graceful movement, each name becomes a visual prayer.
The Twelve Names of Ganesha
1️⃣ Sumukha – The beautiful and graceful-faced one
2️⃣ Ekadanta – The one with a single tusk
3️⃣ Kapila – The tawny or reddish-brown one
4️⃣ Gajakarnaka – The one with elephant-like ears
5️⃣ Lambodara – The one with a large belly, symbolising abundance and acceptance
6️⃣ Vikata – The mighty and formidable one
7️⃣ Vighnanasha – The destroyer of obstacles
8️⃣ Vinayaka – The leader and guide
9️⃣ Dhumraketu – The one of smoky radiance
🔟 Ganadhyaksha – Lord of the celestial attendants
1️⃣1️⃣ Bhalachandra – The one adorned with the crescent moon
1️⃣2️⃣ Gajanana – The elephant-faced Lord
In Odissi, these names are embodied. A single gesture becomes an elephant's ear, a crescent moon, or the removal of an obstacle. Through movement, mythology becomes experience, and art becomes devotion.
May the blessings of Ganesha bring wisdom, clarity, and auspicious beginnings to all. 🙏🐘

What is Odissi dance?
Odissi is one of the world's oldest classical dance traditions, with roots stretching back over 2,000 years. Mentioned in the Natyashastra, the ancient Indian treatise on dance, drama and music, it has been passed down through generations as both a performing art and a spiritual practice.
Known for its graceful movements, intricate rhythmic footwork and expressive storytelling, Odissi brings mythological stories, poetry and devotional themes to life through dance. Its distinctive sculptural poses are inspired by the ancient temple art of Odisha, creating a dance form that is both deeply grounded and beautifully expressive.
I am delighted to be sharing this beautiful art form through a 4-week beginner Odissi course on the Sunshine Coast.
No experience is necessary, just curiosity, an open mind and a willingness to move. This course will introduce you to the foundations of Odissi in a welcoming and supportive environment.

In Odissi dance the hands, eyes and facial expressions become a language for storytelling ✨️
In Tolagi, a beautiful Odia abhinaya (expression piece), Krishna approaches Radhā on her way to sell her produce at the market. He sees she has fresh milk and butter and cheekily requests to try some. He then refuses to pay saying that the butter has gone rancid and mischievously dances off playing the flute!

As I immerse myself more and more into the river of Odissi, small pieces of myself flow into it and are taken along on the journey to the sea...
From fury to longing...From raudra to śṛṅgāra 🎭
One of the most extraordinary aspects of Indian classical dance is its emotional range, described in the ancient Nāṭyaśāstra, the foundational text of Indian dance and drama.
In Durgā, the Goddess rises in fierce power to destroy Mahīṣāsura, embodying raudra rasa - the sentiment of rage, strength, and ferocity.
In Snigdhe, the Sakhī imagines Rādhā adorning herself while Kṛṣṇa beholds her beauty, revealing śṛṅgāra rasa - the sentiment of love, devotion, and longing.
Two dances. Two worlds of emotion. One Odissi journey.
