The first week of spring also means it is Fire Adventure Week at This Little Mind FDC, a name coined many years ago by one of our original TLM kiddos, who decided that a week spent practising our emergency procedures sounded much more like an adventure. And really, Fire Adventure Week does sound much better than Fire Emergency Week!
This morning the TLM crew carefully hid our pretend emergency snake ready to teach our playgroup friends what we do if we discover a snake in our yard.
STOP. TELL. MOVE AWAY.
There was just one small problem…..
Someone found the snake before our drill and apparently relocated it to a VERY secret location!
Despite many searches, our snake is still missing! The children had plenty of theories... Did the chickens eat it?
Did a crow take it?
Or perhaps it turned into a real snake and slithered away?
The mystery continues, and whenever it eventually reappears, we’ll be getting a very authentic surprise snake drill!
We had much more success with our fire drill evacuation practice. When Miss Kel blew her whistle, our six educators and 24 children came together, followed Nicky to our evacuation assembly point and practised responding calmly as one big playgroup community.
The TLM kids then helped share our emergency song and signs with their friends, learning and practising the signs for emergency, help, police, fire and ambulance.
Emergency practices don’t need to feel frightening for young children. Through familiar songs, signs, repetition, play and practising together, we can help children understand what to do while building their confidence to respond.
A wonderfully adventurous morning of spring playgroup.... and one very mysterious missing snake🐍🔥
