Just as Brene Brown has often said about what is takes to lead a great life -- a whole hearted approach--- I would say the very same is needed in educating young people. The values that seem to have been called for repeatedly during and post pandemic are: Authenticity, Empathy, Democracy, Equity and Wellness.
What would schools and classrooms look like if these were the priorities that were to guide us?

I have been silent for awhile. I am hoping instead that our students are doing more of the talking, writing, singing, and speaking up. The Vermont Middle School Association is hosting it's annual Beyond Bullying conference on March 14, 2023 https://www.vamle.org/our-student-conference where students are the presenters. Consider hosting a students to student conference and let students take the lead.

These are hard times in which to be an educator. Whether you teach children or head a school, the challenges the pandemic has brought upon us are many.

Since the pandemic has wrought great suffering and loss for so
many in the world, educators rarely complain. Instead they demonstrate compassion and push through each day with amazing resilience.

Students have not been at their best. The strain of chronic anxiety often yeilds obnoxious and even rude behavior. This in turn makes teaching or leading in school more challenging than ever.

But very few school
systems or individual schools have created enough space for therapeutic talk about our changed world. There’s little talk about the strain and how it’s affecting all of us. There’s little talk about how dramatically our world has changed and what that means in relation to
living well? We keep moving forward.

Where are we going? I think we still have the chance to rethink what we should be doing now to educate our young. Remember early pandemic musings?

What matters most? What priorities got us into this mess? What needs to change?
