You don't need contacts to start networking.

Most people think networking means messaging strangers on LinkedIn. It doesn't work well, and it feels terrible to do. Here's what actually works: second-degree connections.

Write down five people you already talk to, classmates, trainers, a former manager back home. Message each one the same question: "who do you know working in IT in Australia?" You'll get two or three names. That's your real starting list, because a warm introduction gets answered, a cold one gets ignored.

When you message the person you were introduced to, skip "would love to connect." Instead: "John mentioned you work in data analytics at company X, I'm finishing my Professional Year and would love to hear how you got into the field, would you have 15 minutes for a call?" Specific, low-pressure, easy to say yes to.

Do this five times a week for a month and you'll have 15 to 20 real conversations, not connections that sit unread. During your internship itself, the same rule applies: every person on your host team is a networking opportunity. Ask one person a week about their career path. You'll leave with a real network, not a contact list.

"Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult situation at work." Most candidates freeze here, not because they lack the experience, but because they don't know how to structure the answer.

STAR gives you the structure. Situation: set the scene in one or two sentences. Task: what were you actually responsible for. Action: what you specifically did, not what the team did. Result: what happened, ideally with a number or outcome attached.

The part people skip most is Action. It's tempting to say "we" the whole way through. Interviewers are listening for "I." They want to know what you did, not what your group did around you.

Prepare three or four stories before the interview, not scripted word for word, just the shape of them. Then you can adapt them to whatever question comes up.

Here's what's actually required, no guesswork.

You'll need a valid passport and visa with full work and study rights, valid for at least 365 days from your PY start date. An IT-related bachelor's degree or higher from an Australian institution. The Australian Study Requirement met. An English test from the last three years showing Competent English, IELTS 6.0 or higher across all bands. And an application interview with an accredited provider like PE.
