Meet the man who invented the bacon and egg burger—Harry Crether. He says it's a big claim but we believe him. Because the Greeks invented everything and this παλικάρι knows his food.
Harry doesn't mind a joke about himself either. He says his wife didn't just get a big fat Greek wedding—she also got a big fat Greek. 😂
He arrived in Lismore from Greece in 1948. He was 11 years old and couldn't speak a word of English. The kids at school made fun of him.
At 20 he bought the Wunderbar café—from the man who would later become his father-in-law. Those same kids who'd laughed at him? They were his first customers.
"They say things, but they don't mean it," he told us. He'd done the same thing himself as a boy in Greece—laughed at the Armenian kids for their broken Greek. "What you give is what you get."
He ran that café for 25 years and he did things his own way. No buns—two thick slices of toast, buttered before AND after so they'd go golden. Cut diagonally, so you got two burgers for the price of one. And the triple decker: rissole on one, bacon and egg on the other, steak on top. If you couldn't fit it in your mouth, you sat down with a knife and fork. 😄
He invented drinks nobody else was selling. Fruit cocktail. Fruit punch—a milkshake with so much fruit salad in the bottom you ate it as much as drank it. Witches brew. And he built a room on top of the shop for the jukebox turntable, because the floods kept coming and it was too heavy to lift.
Harry has been doing the Greek program on River FM for 35 years. He and Maria have been together over 50.

In the 1980s, my Yiayia Areti Feros sat down and recorded her memories—arriving in Byron Bay for the first time as a young bride, the dark streets, the neighbours peeping through the windows to see “what sort of a wife Tony (my Pappou) brought back.”
And the pumpkin scones she made for the refrigeration man Mr Webb and Mrs Webb- who later became their cherished friends. He told her they were so light they weren’t scones at all. They were sponge cakes. 🥹
My family ran Feros & Feros in Byron Bay from 1923. And on Saturday 5 September, I’m bringing their story home to the Byron Theatre stage.
