The two week training workshops have come to a close in Cambodia. The three trainers attending on behalf of the AWPDA (Jesper, David and Wayne) have shown such professionalism and held the AWPDA to the standard we hold throughout the South East Asian Region.

Classes on tracking, advanced obedience and bite work were held with both handlers and trainers excelling. CMAC as in previous years are one of the gracious hosts and students.

Week two has started for the trainers involved in this years training outreach event in Cambodia.
David comes from Australian Police with over 26 years K9 experience. Jesper come in from Denmark AirForce Security.

They have both donated their spare time to transfer some K9 knowledge to the Cambodian units.

Call for Nominations: AWPDA Advisory Board
The Australian Working Patrol Dog Association (AWPDA) invites nominations from qualified professionals interested in serving on the AWPDA Advisory Board.

Up to six representatives from the K9, industry will be selected to reflect the diverse nature of the sector, serving a two-year term concluding in November 2026.

Current industry representatives will cast votes to elect new members at the end of the existing term in November 2024.

Functions of the Board

The Board is a non-statutory body established to identify and discuss opportunities to:
• improve K9 industry
• address barriers that hinder industry efforts to improve competence and compliance levels
• collaborate on initiatives, events and campaigns targeting, or relating to K9 industry sectors
• share feedback about AWPDA and industry activities.

Membership

• Chairperson - President, AWPDA
• Vice President, AWPDA
• Maximum 6 industry representatives, selected through an expression of interest process, representing the diversity of the industry.

Selection of industry representative members

The election of industry representatives for AWPDA Advisory Board membership is based on the following criteria:
• the nominee’s relevant expertise and experience
• the nominee’s active participation in, and commitment to, the K9 industry
• the nominee’s willingness to seek and represent the views of other industry participants
• any other relevant skills, qualities and/or qualifications they possess.

Remuneration and allowances

Industry representatives are honorary members of the Board and no remuneration is payable to them in respect of the duties they perform as members. Role of members AWPDA Advisory Board members will bring a range of professional expertise to the Board and should use their relevant experience to inform Board discussions. The performance of members is crucial to achieving the effective operation of the Board. Board members are expected to:
• behave in a professional manner at all times
• seek to continually improve their industry knowledge

Trainer Highlight: Chris Willingham

Master Sergeant (retired) Chris Willingham served in the United States Marine Corps from January 1999 to January 2019. Chris dedicated a majority of his career to the Military Working Dog (MWD) Program. Throughout his 20 year career, Chris served as a MWD handler, trainer, instructor and supervisor.

From 2000-2003, Chris served as a Patrol Explosive Detection Dog handler at Provost Marshals Office Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. With his assigned MWD, Tekky, Chris provided force protection and conducted law enforcement operations to include supporting multiple Secret Service missions.

Chris reported to Marine Corps Detachment, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas in February 2003. While assigned to the DoD Dog Training Section, Chris served as a MWD trainer and Team Chief. He was selected to serve as the first Marine instructor for the Specialized Search Dog Handlers (SSD) Course which was newly developed off-leash explosive detection capability. In 2006, Chris completed an advanced Specialized Search Dog course through the Israeli Defense Force Oketz K-9 Unit where he was paired with SSD Lucca. Chris and SSD Lucca completed two tours to Iraq where Lucca was credited with numerous IED finds and responsible for saving countless lives.

In June 2010, Chris led 30 MWD teams to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These 30 teams performed exceptional in combat and set a high standard for MWD teams.
From 2011 to 2014, Chris served as a Detachment Commander at the United States Embassy in Helsinki, Finland and the Recruiting, Advertising and Screening Chief for the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group at Quantico, Virginia.

Chris reported to 1st Law Enforcement Battalion in September 2014 where he served as the Kennel Master for the Military Working Dog Platoon. In April 2016, he deployed with 8 MWD teams in support of Operation Spartan Shield to establish the first MWD Kennels in Kuwait to support operations throughout the Middle East.
From 2017-2019, Chris served as the Marine Corps Special Operations Command Multi-Purpose Canine Program Manager.

Our training centre will be hosting a patrol dog trainer’s course in August 2024 from the 1st to the 31st and located in the southern table lands NSW area (close to ACT) it will have students from international Police units attending; it will have a comprehensive training program for puppies incorporated, completely free of charge and open to you to submit your puppy.
This program includes environmental and socialization training, as well as specialized modules in prey drive development, tracking, and detection imprinting.
