Today is Preschools Day of Action.
We seek your support for our preschool campaign advocating for fair pay and recognition for the dedicated teachers and educators at our community preschool. We know that community preschools are the preferred choice for many parents because they deliver high-quality education and care to children.
Did you know......
Community preschools are three times more likely to be rated as Exceeding National Quality Standards than long day care services where only 18% are rated as Exceeding.
Despite this, teachers and educators working in long day care services are paid at least 15% above those working in community preschools.
Community preschool teachers have the same qualifications as teachers in schools but are paid up to 30% less. Same qualifications, same accreditation and same role – in fact the responsibilities of an Early Childhood Teacher and an Educator in a community preschool can often be much higher than in a school.
These pay gaps make it increasingly difficult for preschools to attract and retain passionate, qualified staff. Funding for community preschools is solely derived from the NSW Government. The recent government announcement on Expanding Quality Access (EQA) program will not assist most community preschools and will not support wages.
The EQA will turn community preschools into long day care centres, enrolling children from a younger age, operating for longer hours, diminishing many of the attributes of preschool’s that enable them to deliver the high quality programs they do currently. These changes may mean that families lose the ability to choose what type of early learning program their child can attend prior to school.
Without additional funding, community preschools may be forced to:
* significantly increase fees, thereby placing financial pressures on families
* reduce staffing levels
* compromise quality to remain viable into the long term.
The IEU and community preschools are urging the NSW Government to provide additional funding so that community preschools can address this crisis - without passing the costs to families.
If you would like to fill in the blank postcard to support this action please do so and share it with us.
