A child's first experience at the dentist can shape how they feel about oral health for years to come. 💯 That's why preparation through play can be so powerful.

When children have the opportunity to explore dental tools through role play, sing songs about brushing, care for toys with "sore teeth" or read stories about visiting the dentist, they're building familiarity long before their appointment.

That cardboard box in your recycling pile? To a child, it could be a wheelbarrow, treasure chest, construction vehicle, boat or the beginning of an entirely new adventure. 🙌

One of the greatest things about loose parts play is that it doesn't require expensive resources. Everyday items headed for the recycling bin can become powerful tools for exploration, creativity and movement.

And during the cooler months, when children may be spending more time indoors, opportunities for "big, sweaty play" become even more important. Activities that involve lifting, carrying, digging, pushing and transporting help children develop gross motor skills, body awareness, coordination and confidence while providing an outlet for all that built-up energy.

💡 Try this:
• Save large cardboard boxes, tubes and containers
• Create opportunities for transporting materials around the outdoor environment
• Set up simple treasure hunts using loose parts and sensory materials
• Follow children's ideas and watch where their imagination takes them

👀 Supervision is more than simply watching children. It’s about being present, aware and responsive.

We had the pleasure of delivering Supervision Training to the wonderful team at 📍Wongan Hills Cubby House.

We started by unpacking what supervision currently looks like within their own service, from their structure, team dynamics, routines, policies and procedures.

From there, we collaboratively developed a clear and consistent supervision approach, grounded in their context and everyday practice. This process helped strengthen safe practices and ensured every educator had a shared understanding of their role in actively keeping children safe.

Together, we reflected on the realities of busy environments and what it really means to be present, intentional, and responsive in supervision - not just positioned, but truly engaged.

Many neurodivergent educators are incredible problem-solvers and deeply caring team members. In our fast-paced ECEC environments, it can feel natural to jump in, take on extra responsibilities, support everyone else and try to solve every challenge that arises throughout the day.

But constantly operating in “helper mode” without checking in on your own capacity can quickly lead to overwhelm and burnout.

One powerful strategy is learning to pause and reflect:
❓ Is this within my role or scope right now?
❓ Do I have the emotional, mental or physical capacity for this today?
❓ What support might I need before taking this on?

Fluctuating capacity is common for many neurodivergent individuals. Having different energy levels, focus or executive functioning from one day to the next isn’t laziness, but part of understanding and working with your nervous system, not against it.

Creating psychologically safe workplaces means recognising that support, boundaries and self-awareness benefit everyone on the team, ultimately creating better environments for children too.
