Memory aid: think of wine glass shape - or waist (goes in in the middle).

Well, my waist used to go in! ;-)

Also identifiable with the black strip in the middle - arrow point into the middle and that is where the black strip is on the main body.

Arcs of navigation lights - nav lights show other boats what we are doing!

While you don't need to remember the arcs (degrees) of our nav lights, Be aware they are carefully set. As these show other boats what you are doing at night (or in restricted visibilty)

Why would the masthead/steaming light be separate from the stern light - ie why migh we turn off the masthead or steaming light? ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵

When in a crossing situation (with two power driven vessels) give way to starboard (the right).

Remember in maritime not boat has 'right of way' - there is the give way vessel and the stand-on vessel

The stand-on vessel, maintains their course and speed unless getting in a close quarters situation.

Check the weather a few days before you go out - the day before - on the day and while you are on the water.

Weather forecasts will often not predict localised storms - aka squalls - which can be severe and turn a great day out on the water into a disaster!
