Today at Beerwah Early Years Education, we dedicated our art activity to Remembrance Day.

We began by discussing the importance of this day, focusing on the poppy flower as a symbol of reflection and remembrance.

It is a time to honour the bravery of countless men, women, and animals who served in the war.

The children listened attentively as we explained that this day marks the peace agreement that ended World War 1 at 11am on 11th November 1918.

Interactive Clay Play

Our sensory journey continued with clay play, providing another opportunity for exploration and learning.

By adding water to soften the clay, the boys discovered the material's changeable nature.

They experimented with wooden tools, rollers, and paintbrushes, trying to cut the clay in half.

This hands-on experience not only enhanced their fine motor skills but also introduced them to the concept of cause and effect—a fundamental principle in early learning.

This aligns with EYLF Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.

This morning, Bjourn and Leandro were brimming with excitement as they headed straight to the big yard.

Leandro pointed out the abundance of leaves scattered on the ground.

With a sense of purpose, he picked up a rake and encouraged Bjourn to join him with a broom.

Together, the boys raked the leaves, shovelling them diligently into their wheelbarrow.

This activity not only demonstrated their enthusiasm for maintaining their environment but also highlighted their developing cooperation skills and sense of responsibility (EYLF Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world).

Our morning began at the sand pile, where our little construction team immersed themselves in a flurry of activity.

With shovels and rakes in hand, they diligently moved sand from one pile to another, demonstrating great teamwork and sharing as they took turns with the wheelbarrow.

This cooperative play not only fostered social skills but also encouraged physical development, aligning with Outcome 2 of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which emphasizes children becoming connected with and contributing to their world.

This morning I prepared some play dough, enriched with garden herbs for an aromatic sensory provocation.

The children's senses were awakened as they molded the dough and adorned it with basil, mint, rosemary, and dill.

Each child explored the scents, discussing which ones they favoured, further enhancing their language and sensory development (EYLF Outcome 4.1

Smoothie Making

Given the warm morning, the boys requested a smoothie. Together, they moved up to the main house where they cut strawberries and tasted honey. They demonstrated their ability to follow a sequence and engaged in meaningful discussions about food waste and animal care, placing the leftover strawberries in the chook bucket (EYLF Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing).

Yoga and Visiting the Chickens

After a calming yoga session, we visited the chickens to give them the accumulated scraps. This experience not only reinforced their understanding of responsibility and sustainability but also allowed them to connect with nature and care for living things (EYLF Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world).

Fine Motor Activity with Water and Pom Poms

Our fine motor activity was a great success, riveting the boys with the challenge of retrieving pom poms from water using tongs. This task helped to refine their pincer grasp and hand-eye coordination, essential components of fine motor development. The determination and concentration shown as they manoeuvred the tongs were commendable.

Sensory Provocation with Shaving Foam and Food Colouring

Lastly, our sensory provocation with shaving foam and food colouring was a hit. The boys eagerly mixed the foam with the colours, observing the changes in texture and hue. Sensory play of this nature is crucial for cognitive development, as it encourages children to explore their senses and enhances their understanding of scientific concepts (EYLF Outcome 4.1).
