⭐️If the final sound in the syllable ends with an /n/ or /l/, it is an OW spelling. Or if it rhymes with town or owl!
✅️ Protect cognitive load and leave exceptions for a session or two later (or when they ask, "What about...")

🥰This is the luxury of one-on-one learning. Being able to call out, risk making mistakes and participate in a way they can connect because this is THEIR session, all about them!

❗️I want to be clear though. Every child is different. Some children like to remain quiet and take it all in, it doesn't mean they are not participating. Some children need something in their hand, write along with me or stand up next to me near the board. Others must call out the answers and ask the questions immediately (something they don't usually get to do!)

📣 The suffix -ed says /t/ after basewords ending in /sh, ch, p, k/
⭐️ Often, for children with dyslexia, dysgraphia and/or developmental language disorder this voicing does not come natural and must be explicitly taught for both reading and spelling purposes.
🧠Morphology is taught for meaning. -ed is a past tense action.
📖 This is so the child doesn't read the word crunched as /crunch.ed/
📝 and doesn't spell it as cruncht.

👋 Research suggests that between 25-40% of people with ADHD also have dyslexia. Coincidence? Absolutely not.
❗️Both affect the working memory and holding onto the information while using it.
❗️Both also affect processing speed, so the task of reading and spelling tasks longer and feels more tiring.
❗️And finally, both involve attention and executive functions, like planning and staying on task.
✋️When ADHD and dyslexia is present, reading and spelling is doubly demanding on all these systems!
✔️This is why it is so important to assess for both and look at the whole child. If one has been identified, then it is well worth investigating the other.
