After a huge public backlash, NSW Police has backed down and restored the confidentiality that police chaplains have relied on for 50 years. 👏

Even Premier Chris Minns acknowledged chaplains "do an incredible job" supporting officers in the toughest circumstances.

✅ Confidential pastoral care has been protected.
✅ Police officers can continue to seek trusted spiritual support.
✅ The only exception is during a significant or mass casualty event to ensure affected officers receive welfare support—a sensible safeguard.

This is also a reminder that Australia's Christian heritage has given us institutions built on trust, compassion and service. We ignore those foundations at our peril.

Well done to the courageous chaplains who stood their ground. 💙✝️

Family First welcomes NSW Police chaplaincy backdown

Family First National Director and NSW Legislative Council candidate Lyle Shelton has welcomed the NSW Police Force's decision to amend controversial chaplaincy contracts after widespread concern that they would undermine the confidentiality at the heart of pastoral care.

Mr Shelton said the backdown was a victory for common sense and for the many police chaplains who courageously spoke out rather than compromise the trust placed in them by officers.

"I welcome the decision to clarify the contracts and preserve the confidentiality that has made police chaplaincy such a valued institution for the past 50 years," Mr Shelton said.

Premier Chris Minns himself acknowledged the importance of chaplaincy, saying: "(Chaplains) do an incredible job with police morale, dealing with often young officers in horrifyingly difficult circumstances, and we owe them a big debt of gratitude."

"That is exactly why confidentiality matters. Police officers must know they can speak freely to a chaplain without fear that their private struggles will become management information."

Mr Shelton said the episode should serve as a warning about the consequences of a society losing touch with the Christian foundations that helped shape Australia's institutions.

"As Australia drifts further from the Christian worldview that made our nation one of the freest, safest and most compassionate societies on earth, it becomes easier for well-meaning bureaucracies to make decisions that fail to understand the unique role pastoral care plays in a healthy civil society.

"Christian chaplaincy is not just another employee assistance program. It is built on trust, compassion, forgiveness and the sacred duty of confidentiality. Those principles have strengthened police officers and their families through the darkest moments of their lives for generations.

"I commend NSW Police for listening to the concerns of chaplains and correcting this mistake. I hope this episode reminds governments everywhere that our Christian heritage contains enduring wisdom which should be preserved, not sidelined."

NSW Police has clarified that the revised contract only permits chaplains to confirm the identity of officers they are supporting following a significant or mass casualty event to ensure affected officers receive appropriate welfare support. Family First accepts this as a reasonable and limited exception to the normal principle of pastoral confidentiality.

Today - and any time this week - please pray for increasing discernment in the islands of Oceania, including Australia and New Zealand. In Melanesia the supernatural was part of a belief system in magic, gods and power, and so Old Testament bible stories were easily believed. In Australia and New Zealand the flourishing of the New Age left many new believers with a residue of mixed ideas. Pray for the clarity of the gospel to triumph over primitive and superstitious ideas.

PRAY TODAY FOR TUVALU
The prophetic miracle of Tuvalu told by Teatu Fusi, is yet another astonishing visitation of God and communal conversion that persists today. About 98% of the people are Christians in the church established by native missionaries in the 1860's. Pray for a new miracle - the reversal of erosion of the islands. The encroachment of the sea is destroying their way of life. Tuvalu is only 26 square kilometres, and the population only about 10,000.

Today as you pray for the 30,000 islands of Oceania, remember we are part of the Global South - the hemisphere which has replaced Europe as the "home" of Christianity. There is revival everywhere in the global south, which includes Africa, India, South Asia and South America. Australia and New Zealand are the exception - secular Western nations at the centre of thriving new church movements. We need a visitation. Be ready to welcome the revival experience of all the lands of the Global South.
