When children are given the time and space to investigate the natural world, learning happens everywhere.

With a digital microscope in hand, our little explorer is taking a closer look at the tiny details hidden in our outdoor environment, building curiosity, observation skills and an understanding of the world around them.

Your child doesn't need to be told the answer. They need the chance to find it.
A magnet that won't let go of a paperclip. Celery drinking coloured water and turning the leaves blue. Sand that erupts. These aren't just fun moments, they're how young children build the confidence to test an idea and see it through. That kind of thinking, ask, try, observe, doesn't need a worksheet. It needs the right materials, a bit of mess, and an adult who lets the question matter.

Every Bush Kindy walk is a chance for our children to slow down, get curious, and connect with the natural world right on our doorstep. They spot insects, feel bark, listen for birds, and build the kind of confidence that only comes from real outdoor exploration.

Why we get children outside the gate.

Learning doesn’t stop at our fence line. Every so often we take the children out into Barden Ridge itself, because the world outside is one of the best teachers we have. Fresh air, real grass underfoot, and new sights all build confidence in ways a classroom alone can’t.

Our teddy bear picnic was one example. What matters isn’t the picnic itself, it’s what happens when children navigate a new space, work together, and bring a piece of home into the world with them.

This is what we mean when we say we’re raising confident, curious kids.

How do you really know a centre is the right one?

You can read the website and take the tour. But the truest answer comes from families who’ve lived it. Matthew has three children with us, one now off at big school, and after a year he says the staff “treat everybody like family” and that his kids’ learning has taken off.

That’s what we want every family at The Ridge to feel: known, welcomed, and watching their child thrive.

Our purple bin is full, and our children know exactly why.

This week, the children gathered to learn about our “Can Do It Fund” – a recycling initiative where the bottles and cans our families bring in go into our Return & Earn bin and come back as something the children actually get to choose.

We talked about how the truck comes to collect the bin, turns those empties into money, and that money goes straight to buying new toys for their preschool. Then two little helpers stepped up and proudly wheeled the bin to the curb together.

This is what sustainability looks like in a preschool – not a worksheet, but a real act of care that children can see, touch, and feel proud of. And we take turns doing this all year long.

A huge thank you to every family who’s dropped off bottles and cans. You’re teaching your children something that lasts.

“This is only for boys and men. They play this at ceremonies. But they didn’t always play it down here where we live.”

During her visit to The Ridge for National Reconciliation Week, Aunty Deanna introduced our children to the yidaki (didgeridoo) and the coolamon, sharing not just what these objects are, but where they belong, who they belong to, and why that matters.

This is what All In looks like in an early childhood setting. Not a worksheet. Not a poster on a wall. A real person, real knowledge, real Country.

We are so grateful to Aunty Deanna for sharing her time and her culture with our community.

We acknowledge the Gweagal people of the Dharawal Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our centre stands, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

“From the moment we walked in, it just had this real calm, community vibe.”

This week, our children were welcomed into a living lesson about Country, culture, and belonging.
Aunty Deanna Schreiber, Gadigal Elder and Sutherland Shire local, visited The Ridge to share Aboriginal knowledge and perspectives with our children. Through her session on the different Aboriginal Countries across Australia and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, our little ones began to understand something that matters deeply: that this land has stories, and people, and meaning that goes far back before any of us.
Watching children sit with that kind of learning is one of the most grounding things we get to witness as educators. Curiosity. Respect. Wonder.
We are grateful to Aunty Deanna for her time, her generosity, and her willingness to bring that knowledge into our space.
