Too Late for Tables? “Never!” says Ian from Frontrunner
How many parents groan when their high school student resorts to the calculator for 7x12 or ⅔ x 9? Year 6 students are often faster with these manual processes than Year 10s.
Calculators speed up working, but using one unnecessarily actually wastes time. Quicker tables could even save some HSC students precious minutes in exams for completing or checking answers; especially for factorising and surds.
Some schools set tasks in Years 9&10 where calculators cannot be used and processes like long multiplication have to be done by hand. This is not just to remember the process, but also to help students recognise when a calculator answer is clearly wrong.
Ian Ventura, Principal of Frontrunner Learning Centres Bankstown says there is nothing wrong with having your child do some of their Maths homework without a calculator occasionally. It just may keep some of those valuable skills alive and fast.
Call to enrol your child for help from Ian’s professional tutors at Bankstown’s own Frontrunner Learning Centre now on 9793 7105.
