📢 Water Quality Alert following flooding 🐟
Recent flooding from Tropical Cyclone Alfred has impacted water quality in our river system. Swimming and water recreation is not recommended at our beaches or rivers while there is evidence of pollution and poor water quality.
🐟 What’s that smell? Low oxygen levels in the Richmond River are causing fish kills in affected areas, including:
📍 West Ballina canals
📍 Ballina riverbanks
📍 Gawandii Beach and Shaws Bay
Ballina Shire Council, Rous County Council, and OzFish are actively monitoring water quality across our catchment . Our crews are working hard to clean up affected areas, but with widespread impacts, we appreciate the community’s help.
How You Can Help:
✅ Residents and volunteers can collect dead fish, place them in tied-up plastic bags, and leave them kerbside for collection. Then please call or email Council to advise the location.
✅ Or you can drop off bagged dead fish directly to the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre for free.
We appreciate your assistance as we work together to restore our waterways.
