We’ve been working on a ton of upgrades to Ballys Patch recently. Here’s a snapshot!

- The citrus grove is now w**d free, and mulched 🍋
- Our new compost bays built by some of our dedicated members!
- The first batch of compost is cooking! 🧑‍🍳
- We still welcome compost material deliveries 🚚! Green materials (lawn clippings, plant cuttings, coffee grounds) and brown materials (dried leaves, saw dust, shredded paper) can be dropped in the bins behind the new compost bays.
- We are always grateful for donations, and this healthy birds nest fern has found the perfect shady home in the southern garden. 🪴
- To continue our w**d suppression, we’ve planted melons among the nasturtium in the central garden - both practical and productive! 🍉
- As part of the recent project refresh, the storage area is also getting a facelift!
- 🍃 The Mulberry is waking from its slumber
- Goodbye w**ds around the Mango and new compost bays 😮‍💨
- We have a shiny new handmade sign to welcome people of all ages and abilities 👋

⚪️ BLANCHING. We are first timers growing Leek this winter and it’s time to begin blanching them. It’s a slow game with leeks - around 6months from seed. We’re at 8 weeks and this is the time to cover the bases to achieve the thick white lower stem. We have used toilet paper rolls pushed over the base with some mulch to fill them. This blocks the light from the base to keep them white. Fun fact: it’s the same method used to achieve white asparagus!

We are immensely proud of these girls and grateful to have them as volunteers! 🤗They are completing their Duke of Edinburgh and have chosen Ballys Patch for their volunteer pillar. Their project they are working on is a herb spiral - and today it came to life! The area was cleared, and they have built the structure with old pavers and bricks, then filled the base with organic matter. Next they will add soil, plant the herbs and create signage. Stay tuned for the official opening later in the year! We can’t wait.
