We are immensely proud of these girls and grateful to have them as volunteers! 🤗They are completing their Duke of Edinburgh and have chosen Ballys Patch for their volunteer pillar. Their project they are working on is a herb spiral - and today it came to life! The area was cleared, and they have built the structure with old pavers and bricks, then filled the base with organic matter. Next they will add soil, plant the herbs and create signage. Stay tuned for the official opening later in the year! We can’t wait.

Big thank you to Flynn from who has recently supplied shredded paper to Ballys Patch. And we are so grateful!!! Today we use it as a layer in our no dig bed to rebuild and replenish soil. In a few weeks we’ll be planting garlic in this bed. Thanks Flynn!

This week we’re sharing some of our many visitors and volunteers to Ballys Patch. It’s these people who keep this space alive and thriving! This year we have a group of local high school students completing their community skills for the Duke of Edinburgh program. These two cowgirls removed a dying rosemary shrub and replaced it with a Lily Pily to complete the eastern hedge and they planted a new Lemon Verbena which smells delicious and will also help to suppress the overwhelming nut grass surrounding the Mango Tree. They also saved a praying mantis 🦗 and countless spiders 🕷️ while feeding the curl grubs to some local chickens 🐛. Everyone wins!

We have a range of visitors and volunteers to Ballys Patch, recently Cubs & Joeys came to lend a hand. They were incredible! Cleaning up our hedge, adding to our compost, weeding and harvesting- they did it all! If you have a volunteer group who are keen to visit, DM us or email [email protected].

We often get asked about how to make great compost. We follow the general rule of 20% “green” (nitrogen) and 80% “brown” (carbon). If you’re short on brown materials - check your gutters and the kerb! The leaf litter in there is usually a little decomposed already and full of microorganisms to help break down the material. 🍂
