Clay Field Therapy® is a sensorimotor art therapy approach that engages clients through touch, movement and three-dimensional haptic exploration.

It's grounded in the understanding that traumatic experience is encoded not only in narrative memory but also in the body's postures, gestures, and actions.

Within this modality, therapists learn to observe how both individual and collective trauma manifest through:
🙌 The organisation of the hands in the clay
🙌 The structuring of space
🙌 Patterns of contact, avoidance, tension and collapse

If you're an Art Therapist, Mental Health Professional or Educator wanting to bring this powerful, body-based approach to your work with children, we invite you to register for our free 30-minute webinar ahead of our August intake for Clay Field Therapy with Children.

The Transformation Journey, one of our core trainings, teaches two core ways of facilitating Guided Drawing sessions - a directive and a non-directive approach.

Some clients such as children and teens, or those struggling with mental illness and overwhelm need a directive, structured approach. These client groups easily get lost unless given clear structures for scaffolding their developing or compromised sense of self.

For many, the dynamics of bilateral drawing in rhythmic repetition is unsafe; they become disoriented drawing with closed eyes, as the felt sense has not yet developed into awareness, or is too dissociated to be within reach. For many traumatised clients, the body is not yet a friend.

Other clients are over-structured, too much in their head, and longing for more connection with their feelings and emotions. Stressed, and dissociated from their body and inner flow, these clients profoundly benefit from inner guidance and the therapist's support in learning to trust their intuition, letting go of the need to control as they close their eyes and engage in rhythmic exploration to discover a new safety in their embodiment.

Both client groups benefit from Guided Drawing® but sessions are facilitated in very different ways. Learning to recognise and apply both approaches is the theme of The Transformation Journey.

Our Healing Trauma with Guided Drawing intake begins July 26 - and you can start now.

We have a Guided Drawing Course Bundle that begins with The Transformation Journey ahead of the new intake, then you move directly into Healing Trauma with Guided Drawing.

On completion of both courses, you will hold the highest level of certification available in Guided Drawing®.

Payment plans and multi-currency payment available. Save $165 USD on the Bundle and receive access to both courses.

When the Guided Drawing workshops I facilitate attracted increasing numbers of participants, the need to establish self-directed safety became important.

Over time I learnt that there were three core shapes that were suitable to self-regulate the nervous system quite effectively. These days I start all Guided Drawing groups with inexperienced and new clients by practicing these three shapes first, if need be, extensively.

Find out more about these three core intervention shapes in my new blog > https://www.sensorimotorarttherapy.com/blog/guided-drawing-the-three-core-intervention-shapes

If you're new to our work, you might be new to our work and be wondering... What is Guided Drawing? 🤔

Guided Drawing is a bilateral approach to body mapping, a sensorimotor practice that uses a bottom-up approach to build awareness of body sensations: in the muscles, the viscera, the heart rate, and the breath.

Rather than turning a feeling into an image, you translate it into movement.

A fluttering in the stomach? You flutter with the crayons just as "it" flutters inside you.

With a crayon in each hand and eyes closed, you find a rhythm and a shape that lets you safely let go of cognitive control because your head does not know the needed outcome.

Rhythmic repetition gradually allows you to connect with implicit memory, your embodied biography rather than the conscious stories of your past.

The inquiry shifts from "How do I feel?" to "What do I need?" This may be soothing, circular motions, or straight, sharp lines to release pressure, or containment to be held.
