Come join me for a one-hour online session … zooming in on ‘mini-moments’ as a strategy for engaging with pedagogical documentation.

Together, we’ll think about how paying attention to the everyday encounters, conversations and discoveries alongside children can help us make learning visible, notice emerging curriculum ideas, and consider future design possibilities.

My favourite projects are often those where we have the opportunity to think together over time.

Such a treat to be back with Fairfield City Council over the last two days, talking all things educational leadership.

From examining our roles, to thinking about the kinds of planning systems that invite thinking, to practising how we might lead the learning design process together, what a wonderful opportunity to co-construct knowledge together.

So grateful for this ongoing partnership and the possibilities that continue to emerge.

In recent leadership conversations, I’ve been reminded of the importance of making space for alternate ideas. Much of how we lead can become familiar, sometimes almost unconscious. Inherited ways of working, expectations, habits and routines can quietly, or sometimes loudly, simply become the way we do things!

But might there be another way?

In From Teaching to Thinking, Ann Pelo and Margie Carter draw on Carol Anne Wien’s idea of teacher scripts, those often unexamined ideas about what teachers ought to do. It has me wondering whether, as pedagogical leaders, we carry leadership scripts too.

Perhaps …
-I need to have the answer.
-We need to get through the agenda.
-This is how planning works.
-This is how we’ve always organised things.

Of course, these scripts aren’t necessarily wrong. Often, they emerge because we care deeply about doing a good job and supporting those around us.

But maybe pedagogical leadership for inquiry invites us to notice when the familiar begins to narrow what else might be possible. Inquiry asks us to stay curious, to question and to make room for alternate ways of thinking and being.

Pelo and Carter’s writing on improvisation has me thinking here too. About being sufficiently present to notice what is being offered, to listen, respond, add our own wondering and support something new to emerge.

Perhaps part of leading is this ongoing process of unlearning and relearning, loosening our grip on some of the scripts we know well enough to make room for alternate ideas.

What leadership scripts might be worth noticing in your place? And what might become possible if we made a little more room for inquiry and improvisation?
