“‘To design systems that seek to increase the complexity of our thinking about children’s thinking as we join attention to children’s attention, and move from a stance of tentativeness and curiosity’
(Pelo and Carter, 2018, p. 253).

I keep returning to this idea this year, as I work alongside teams thinking together about the Early Years Planning Cycle and the systems we create around it.

How might we design systems that help us think, systems that support us to do the work rather than perhaps get in the way of the work?

Such a privilege to spend today alongside Jess and Lucy at Wudinna Kindergarten, companioning one another in deep conversation about planning cycles, planning systems, curiosity and thinking in action.

Always wonderful catching up with Jess and Lucy. Looking forward to continuing the conversation soon!

What might we imagine this to be?

From time to time, we notice those spaces in our environments that, over time, have become a little lost. Spaces that perhaps no longer hold the same sense of purpose, or ones we simply haven’t been paying close attention to.

It has been such a joy to spend the past few days alongside Tina and the educators at Kangaroo Island Childrens Services, Kingscote site.

Together, some of the preschool children have began revisiting the old ‘chicken house’, spending time both in and around the space. We invited imagination into the conversation, wondering with children what this place might be. There is always that quiet mix of anticipation and hesitation when offering big questions, and a sense of excitement about what might unfold.

Through the language of drawing, children have been exploring and discussing ideas. Already, so many possibilities have emerged. BMX tracks, underground passages to the skate park, a new chicken house, a flower garden, and even a ‘portal’ … ideas moving between the possible and the imagined.

After almost three days of drawing, Tina is beginning to think more about representational drawing. Next week, there are plans to introduce colour as we continue to collect ideas and invite children to revisit and add detail to their thinking.

We don’t yet know where this will go, and perhaps that is part of the invitation. To stay with the questions. To remain open to possibility and all while holding our intentions in mind. Spaces are beginning to be organised to keep these ideas visible, holding our thinking in place and inviting us to keep returning.

All an invitation to think, to talk, to draw, to wonder … and to be researchers together.

Looking forward to catching up soon.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to learn alongside colleagues at University of Melbourne, engaging in CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) training.

At times it was challenging … but I really enjoyed the process. I found myself thinking lots about how tools like this can help us reflect on the bias we might bring to observation, and the importance of conversations in building collective understanding of practice.

I’ve already been playing with some of these ideas, and I’m excited to share that my certification is now complete.

I’m looking forward to weaving this into my pedagogical coaching work.

Have you got your copy of Redefining Planning and Assessment?

A book born through conversation, intersecting pathways, and a shared commitment to seeing, hearing and honouring children and educators. Together, we set out to illuminate pedagogical documentation as a living process… to spark dialogue… and to reimagine documentation as a collaborative, creative act.

Drawing inspiration from around the world, this book brings pedagogical documentation to life in the Australian context.

I’m incredibly grateful for the companionship of Anthony and Alma, and for the generosity of the contributing authors, educators, children and families who shared their stories. And of course Pademelon Press!

To celebrate the launch of the new website, the book is currently on sale. Grab your copy and let us know what you think!

5 days left to register for our gathering in Port Lincoln!

Currently immersing myself in a context of research, germinating ideas for our time together and thinking deeply about the possibilities for planning, documentation and assessment.

If you’re in Port Lincoln or surrounds, come join us for a small gathering where we will dive into all things planning for learning … thinking together, sharing stories from practice, and playing with possibilities for documenting and interpreting learning alongside children.

There will be lots of conversation, practical ideas, reflection, and space to wonder together about what meaningful planning might look and feel like in everyday practice.

Looking forward to being in dialogue together.

‘The result is knowledge that is bountiful and enriched by the contributions of many’ -Carla Rinaldi, 2001.

This idea of bountiful knowledge has always resonated with me … a reminder to participate fully. To listen, share, debate, and dialogue in the pursuit of richer and shared understandings.

Such a gift to have spent the last two days in this place of exchange alongside educators at Keith War Memorial Kindergarten and Childcare Centre … germinating ideas and, importantly, moving from ‘in motion’ to ‘in action’ … trying, testing, and practicing these ideas together. Taking our thinking, into plans that communicate collective intentions and then starting the process of setting up contexts for our research!

There is something energising that occurs through the process of learning side by side. In the conversations, the uncertainties, the experimentation, and the willingness to have a go! Can’t wait to visit next term!

We invite you to a day of rich dialogue, intellectual stretch, and practical approaches to leading teams with clarity and confidence. This professional learning experience invites participants to move beyond traditional leadership “scripts” and explore how to inspire meaningful change without relying on rigid templates or checklists.

Throughout the day, we will consider how Educational Leaders can design responsive and innovative organisational systems that support growth, adaptability, and a strong sense of professional purpose. By thinking with ideas from coaching, collaboration, and systems thinking, participants will explore how to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement grounded in practitioner research and shared reflective practices.

We share loads of case studies and real-world examples as we make connections to an educational leadership framework that explores the intersections of:
-Systems Approaches
-Technical Approaches
-Pedagogical Approaches

Have you checked out this book?

A fantastic collection of stories… the perfect Educational Leader companion to support you to think about leading educational change.

For me… engaging with practitioner inquiry as a teacher and educational leader has been a source of both joy and complexity. It has invited me to embrace tension, stay with questions, and play with ideas that have deepened my thinking and practice over time as a process of professional learning.

I was delighted to co-author a chapter with Jessica Dubois and Alma Fleet in this book. Thinking together about practitioner inquiry and pedagogical documentation, and weaving through their intersections, was such a treat.
