Made a fascinating discovery while exploring George Town, Penang. Did you know this city is technically Adelaide’s “parent” city?
Before Colonel William Light designed the beautiful grid of Adelaide, his father, Captain Francis Light, was here building Penang in 1786. It’s incredible to see the family legacy that connects Malaysia to South Australia!
I’ve been visiting some of the oldest heritage sites today to see the connection for myself:
• St George’s Church & the Francis Light Memorial: Built in 1818, it’s the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia. Inside, there’s a memorial dedicated to Francis Light—it’s amazing to stand right where the history started. ()
• Fort Cornwallis: The star-shaped fort where the story of modern Penang first began. ( )
• Queen Victoria Clock Tower: A local landmark built for the Diamond Jubilee (it’s 60 feet tall—one foot for every year she reigned!).
• Suffolk House: This was the highlight! This was the Light family’s actual home. It’s been restored into a restaurant now, so I got to walk through the same halls where they lived before William headed to Australia. ()
It makes me so proud to stand here and see the DNA of our home city thousands of kilometers away. A great reminder that history is always connected!

National Bonsai and Penjing collection
Bonsai: Nature in Miniature 🌳
Bonsai is such a beautiful, calming hobby! Here is a friendly breakdown of the basics:
What does "Bonsai" actually mean?
The word literally means "planted in a container." But more than just a plant in a pot, it’s a living art form where you work in harmony with nature to create a tiny version of a majestic old tree.
A Quick History Trip
• Ancient Roots: It actually started in China over a thousand years ago (called Penjing).
• The Japanese Refinement: Japanese monks brought the practice home and simplified it, focusing on the elegance and "Zen" of a single tree.
• Today: It’s a beloved hobby worldwide that teaches patience and appreciation for the seasons.
How to Get Started
You don’t need "magic" seeds—you can start with almost any young tree! Here’s how you keep it small and beautiful:
• Styling (Pruning & Wiring): You’re the artist! You trim away extra growth and use soft wire to gently guide branches into "wind-swept" or "upright" shapes.
• The Roots: Every few years, you trim the roots. This keeps the tree healthy and happy in its small home without it becoming "pot-bound."
• Love & Water: Because the pots are small, they need a little more attention. Most bonsai love being outdoors where they can feel the sun and breeze!
It’s a wonderful way to bring a little extra peace into your daily routine. Are you thinking about picking up a starter tree for your desk or garden?
