🌿 Are you a midwife in private practice—or thinking about it? 🌿
At Midwives Australia, we’re here to support you.
We’re a national organisation that exists solely to represent and walk alongside private practice midwives. Whether you’re just starting out or have been in practice for years, we offer connection, guidance, and quiet strength through every part of the journey.
We collaborate with the Australian College of Midwives, work with consumer groups like the Maternity Consumer Network, and support initiatives such as Bush Babies Matter—all with the shared goal of improving birthing choices for women and their families.
📚 We also offer tailored education and professional development, including the Australian Endorsed Midwives Conference—a welcoming space to learn, share, and grow with others in the field.
Much of what we do happens behind the scenes—advocating for change, mentoring and supporting midwives confidentially in difficult moments, and quietly making space for your voice to be heard.
Your membership and participation helps us continue this important work.
Please consider joining and investing some of your expertise to support other private practice midwives. We need your voice to continue our representation.

This webinar brings together midwives who are endorsed and taking a different pathway. A way of using their endorsement or their midwifery in a way which is a little ( or a lot) different. A way which suits them, aligns with their lives and enables them to work outside of the expected career path.
They'll tell you about what they're doing, how they started and you'll have a chance to ask them questions. There will be a recording for those who can't join us, a certificate of attendance which you can use for your CPD requirements and a number of the presenters have additional support options to offer you.

Thanks to a new $56.5 million Budget investment in midwifery you now have more choice for your maternity care if you choose a private midwife to care for you and your baby.
Starting March 2025, privately practising midwives can offer longer, 90-minute sessions before and after childbirth—all without needing a doctor's sign-off!
These changes recognise the vital role midwives have in your maternity care, including health screenings and a birth debrief. They also make midwifery a more attractive career, especially in regional areas.
This investment means better access to quality midwifery care for you in your community.

For too long, our highly educated nurses and midwives have been held back from operating to the full extent of their skills, training and experience. The Albanese Government has passed legislation to remove barriers and allow nurses and midwives to deliver top quality care across the country and particularly for those in regional areas.

"Birth is about so much more than the wriggling of a tiny body out of a larger one.
When we birth, we don't just birth babies. We birth ourselves, we birth our families and we reshape our lives."
That's one of the most-quoted lines in my book, 'What's Right For Me? Making decisions in pregnancy and childbirth.'
Birth is a journey, and I wrote this book in the hope that it would help women and families to consider what is important for them on that journey.
I wanted to share some of the tools and ideas which can help point the way.
Because the modern world is complex. It's important that we understand how our culture shapes the different options that are available, and how our decisions are affected by the beliefs, experiences and perceptions of ourselves and others.
We need to understand how the idea of risk can affect us and how we can think about decisions clearly, even when things are happening quickly.
There is no one right way, and there's certainly no way that will work for everyone.
What's important is to take the time to ponder the options and decide what path to head on.
No-one can guarantee exactly where it will lead, and that's part of the experience of the journey of birth, but you can decide where you'll begin, who your companions will be and what you want to take with you.
Happy journeying.
