Bella really enjoyed her extended sleep-in on Saturday morning! 😴

This week’s weather is looking a little mixed. While we will continue during some rain, there comes a point where “some rain” crosses over into “a lot of rain.” Rain prediction is often more of an art than a science (even the weather forecasters don’t always get it right!), so we do our best to balance keeping programs running while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both participants and horses.

That said, learning in less-than-perfect weather can actually be incredibly valuable.

Horses don’t stop needing care because it’s raining. Owners still need to feed, rug, un-rug, lead, groom, and handle their horses in all sorts of conditions. Different weather can also bring out different behaviours and quirks in horses, and learning how to recognise and respond to those changes is an important part of becoming a confident horse person.

It’s much better to learn these skills with an experienced instructor beside you than to one day own your own horse and be trying to figure it all out on your own in the middle of a downpour!

So if you find yourself brushing a wet pony, pulling on a raincoat, or navigating a muddy paddock this winter, remember—you’re not just having a riding lesson. You’re learning real-world horsemanship skills that horse owners use every day.

I think the first three seconds of this video perfectly sum up Matilda’s personality. 😅

New object? Questionable life choice.

Her strategy for dealing with the giant ball was simple: put in the absolute minimum effort required to avoid it and hope the problem goes away.

This was her first time playing with a ball, and we’re still spending lots of time building our relationship and introducing her to new experiences. She’s incredibly low energy, but also quietly curious about everything.

Here’s a little highlight reel from our week together. 🐴❤️

This video is from a couple of years ago with Dani 🩷 and Bella.

What I love about this exercise (I call it the Circling Game rather than lunging) is that the horses get a say too. They can offer ideas, change direction, and be part of the conversation rather than simply being told what to do.

I could do just about anything with these two. They were paddock mates and partners in crime for around 15 years, and looking back, I wish I’d spent even more time doing activities like this with them.

What Dani and Bella taught me were the fundamentals. They helped me learn timing, feel, observation and patience. More importantly, they were old enough and wise enough to forgive my mistakes while I was learning. They’d quietly say, “Let’s try that again,” and keep going.

I don’t think I appreciated at the time just how much they were teaching me.

Now I’m wondering… who should be my next Circling Game duo? I’m thinking Bella and Eva. What do you think?

Current mood: coffee in hand, horses on the mind. ☕️🐴

An early concept sketch I’m working on for Sun Gallop Soul.

Still rough around the edges, but I think the vibe is coming together.

Would you wear it?
