We offer trainings on public speaking and argumentation. Some 50 students took part in these trainings. Now, debate trainings take place on a weekly basis.
In October 2010, alumna Maja Nenadovic offered a series of workshops in public speaking, British Parliamentary debate and argumentation. Once they were finished, a small group of enthusiasts decided to organize the CEU Debate Society. The Belgrade Open, one of the biggest, most competitive, and most fun tournaments in the region, was held in February 2011. Two teams and three judges represented CE
U. Zach Israel (Bard Exchange Program) and Usha Sahay (Bard Exchange Program) took 16th place among 56 teams, and were on the verge of breaking to the semifinals because of excellent speaker results (17th for Zach and 22nd for Usha, out of 112 total speakers). James Poplasky (Business School) and Ioana Olariu (Business School) placed 42nd, a great first showing. Maja Nenadovic (Political Science alumna), Anny Stoikova (Legal Studies) and Srdjan Bejakovic (Economics) served as judges. In March 2011, CEU Debate Society organized an internal tournament to select four debaters to represent CEU at the European University Debate Championship, held in Galway, Ireland in August that year. 10 CEU debaters participated in the competition: Anny Stoikova (Legal Studies), Dima Vavriv (Business School), Srdjan Bejakovic (Economics), Zachary Israel (Bard College), Usha Sahay (Bard College), James Poplasky (Business School), Anna Marupova (Sociology), Ioana Olariu (Business School), and Gedion Hessebon (Legal Studies). Special thanks goes to the expert team of judges who came from far and wide to adjudicate the debates: Milan Vignjevic and Selena Torlakovic (Serbia); Julia Mikic (Croatia); Zsuzsa Papp (Hungary); and Radu Cotarcea (Romania). Srdjan, Zach, Usha, and James were the top four debaters, and they got the chance to compete at the biggest and most prestigious debate tournament in Europe. After half a year of preparations, CEU Debate Society in cooperation with Corvinus Vitaklub, organized the first British Parliamentary international tournament in Hungary. Between 2 and 5 March, 2012, 48 teams from 30 countries joined us for Budapest Open. Later on, we attended EUDC 2012 in Belgrade with two teams: Vija Pakalkaite (Economic Policy), Georgiana Mihut (Political Science), Lenny B. Simon (Bard College) and Brendan Duprey (Environmental Studies), and one adjudicator: Ana Gurau (Public Policy alumna). Since 2012, we significantly increased our presence at international tournaments, while having also competed in the EUDC every year. We repeated the amazing Budapest Open experience in March 2013, and again in 2014, 2015, and 2016, bringing in ELTE Vitaklub to the Organizing Committee. Budapest Open is our flagship event. From 19th to 22nd of August, CEU Debate Society, in collaboration with Budapest Debate Union, has organised the 4th edition of the Summer Debating Retreat in Budapest, Hungary.
Throughout the weekend, students from 11 countries came together on the premises of CEU’s former home and participated in multiple workshops on argument building and style. All 35 participants had the chance to practice debate formats such as British Parliamentary, French Debate Association and Karl Popper.
As this was a peer-to-peer learning experience, we thank all our trainers who made the time to come and share with us insightful information and tips on how to debate better.
This event was possible thanks to the help of Central European University, being funded through Community Engagement’s Learn and Engage Grant, CEU Student Union and OSUN Secretariat.

In the last 3 days, Patricia Alexandra Nae (MA in Nationalism Studies) and Markus Pol (MA in International Relations), the coordinators of CEU Debate Society represented CEU, for the first time since its move to Vienna, to Vienna IV, one of the most competitive British Parliamentary Style debate competitions in the region.
Vienna IV hosted 88 teams from all over the world.
The CEU Debate Society debated in 5 rounds, won some of them, lost some others but overall gained lots of insights and new connections in the international debate network.
One of the main supporters of the team and also the best photographer was Yutong Liang, 1st year BA in Quantitative Social Sciences who will be the new coordinator of the club in the upcoming academic year.💫
