Baxtalo Romano Des!
In April 1971, London, Roma representatives from all over the world gathered at the first World Romani Congress, where a number of important decisions were made, including:
- Recognition of the official use of the name Roma
- Adoption of the national symbols, such as the anthem Dzelem dzelem and the blue and green flag with the red 16-spoked chakra
- Establishing 5 sub-commissions focused on social affairs, education, culture, language and war crimes.
Later April the 8th was declared International Roma Day -
The celebration of Romani culture, language and history. It helps to break down stereotypes, and reminds us of the need to respect diversity.

20th February 2026 marks 170 years since the Abolition of Roma Slavery in the Romanian Principalities (1856).
For nearly five centuries (1385–1856), Roma people were enslaved in what is now Romania. It is one of the longest and most silenced chapters of European history. Generations were born, lived, and died in bo***ge. This year it was a great honor for me to attend the events dedicated to memory of the part of the history.
•The launch of the “Roma Voices”.
The project that addresses the persistent lack of awareness and recognition of Roma history seeks to combat stereotypes, discrimination, and social exclusion by promoting non-discrimination, social education, intercultural dialogue, and the recognition of Roma cultural and historical heritage as essential foundations of social cohesion and democratic values.
•The vernissage of “No Longer the Stranger from Within” by Eugen Raportoru at Căminul Artei Gallery became an immersive and deeply moving exhibition bringing together works from Samudaripen alongside new pieces that explore how history lives through materials, memory, and sound. The exhibition powerfully affirms Roma, Sinti, and Traveller experiences, challenging the persistent idea of being “strangers from within” and transforming remembrance into presence.
•Gala and premiere of “Gypsy Queen” took place at National Theatre I.L. Caragiale in the Main Hall.
“Gypsy Queen” is a powerful and inspiring boxing story of a Roma single mother from Romania, directed by Hüseyin Tabak . The main character, Ali, played by Alina Șerban, uses everything to provide for her kids.
The film was nominated for and won several awards in best director and best actress categories, including Best Leading Actress for Alina Șerban at the German Screen Actors Award (2020).
