Seit über 25 Jahren habe ich in unterschiedlichen Rollen als Übersetzer, Texter, Englisch-Berater und -Coach in der Privatwirtschaft gearbeitet.

Jetzt biete ich auch als Selbständiger Englisch-Nachhilfe im nördlichen Flachgau an. Kurz zu mir:

Ich habe Österreich von Grund auf und aus vielen Perspektiven kennengelernt: die Menschen, ihren Humor, ihre Kultur und Mentalität, und ihre Geschäftspraktiken. Als Übersetzer und Englisch-Coach bin ich seit Jahren Trichter für allfällige Fragen bezüglich der Tauglichkeit von Übersetzungen, der Übertragbarkeit von idiomatischen Ausdrücken, und die Fähigkeit von Mitarbeitern mit nicht-deutschsprachigen Klienten zu kommunizieren.

Obviously, in enlightened Austria, that’s just about 75% MEN. I’m being lazy and will simply add the adjective YOUNG.

So what?
Joshua is 25, has a smartphone but doesn’t carry cash. He’s travelling alone.
Jill is 70, has cash, coins and a debit card she rarely uses. She is travelling with her grandson Jordan – 5, and granddaughter Jane – 2.

The task
Stop at a modern motorway service area for a toilet break, a coffee and something to eat.

Levelling the playing field
Joshua has to perform all the tasks wearing motorcycle gloves.

When a world is designed with complete unawareness of the people using it, the last thing you want to hear from the people designing it is: “It’s a user problem”. It’s arrogant and it’s ignorant.

If you’re too lazy to take the test with gloves, just ‘simply’ buy and read these two books!

DER PREIS EINER GRATIS KI-ÜBERSETZUNG?

Google Translate, DeepL & ChatGPT bieten viele Dienstleistungen gratis an. Mittlerweile verwende auch ich die Pro-Version von DeepL, für mich die verlässlichste Möglichkeit eine bearbeitbare Vorübersetzung zu erzeugen.

Ich bin kein Jurist, aber wenn eine Kundschaft klar erkennen würde, dass eine KI-Rohübersetzung von Dritten 1-1 unbearbeitet geliefert worden wäre, fände ich es dreist wenn auf der Rechnung stehen würde:
„Übersetzung“, „Überarbeitung des Textes“ od. dgl.

Die Rohübersetzung leistet Vorarbeit für Übersetzer wie für Kunden. Nichtsdestotrotz muss dieser Übersetzer solange herumwerkeln und gegenchecken bis der Text klickt, brummt, singt und inhaltlich stimmt. Heutzutage ist das oft die eigentliche Arbeit eines Übersetzers. Auch wenn nichts zu ändern ist, die Kontrolle ist wichtig um das festzustellen.

BAD SCIENCE IS GOOD

Bad Science, written by Ben Goldacre, and first published in 2008, is a plea for fair, balanced, ego-free, honest – and qualified – fact- and evidence-based methodology, and predated the pandemic by 12 years. Bad Science is a critique of how scientific methodology is misunderstood, misused and manipulated.
It is most definitely NOT a criticism of scientific methodology.

Bad Science is the perfect book for everyone interested in the principles of scientific enquiry, written for people who have never studied those principles, and who nearly went mad during the pandemic. I stopped using Facebook some time in 2020 because I was sick of reading the comments of bottom-feeding conspiracy theorists: “All scientists are paid by big pharma!” “They’re inventing statistics to scare us into staying at home”, or “if you live and eat healthily Corona’s no worse than a common cold”.

This book is the absolute antithesis of the claim that science is a lie.

So why the publishers at Fischer Verlag chose the following title is absolutely beyond me:

Die Wissenschaftslüge
Translated directly into English that’s “The Science Lie”.

Whether you read it in German or English, read it!

Wenn Schülerinnen Nachhilfe benötigen, und mehr Unterstützung brauchen als die von der Schule aus organisierten Nachmittagsbetreuungen, Lernateliers oder Peer-Nachhilfe-Stunden bieten können, können sie keine Hilfe erwarten auf der Suche nach einem geeigneten Anbieter.

Warum nicht?

Die Salzburger Bildungsdirektion leitete eine Kommunikation an mich weiter, die November 2022 vom Bildungsministerium aus an alle Schulen in Österreich erging...

Klar, das Übersetzen, Englisch-Coaching und -Beratung sind die Dinge, die ich gut kann, die ich gerne mache, und die mich Kontakte mit der Außenwelt bescheren. Ich mag Menschen, und interessiere mich für das, was sie bewegt.
Was meine Innenwelt bewegt war immer die Musik. Mit 8 Jahren finge ich an Cello zu spielen, mit 16 habe ich damit aufgehört und mir das Gitarre-Spielen beigebracht. In 1983 haben wir eine Band gegründet (Malice Virus), und bei der Gelegenheit konnte ich auch Bass, Schlagzeug und Synth lernen.
Dieses Lied habe ich für eine fiktive Serie geschrieben. Alles, was ich komponiere hat diese Schwere. Wenn Du vor Glück weinst, ist es weil Du etwas durchgemacht hast. Das ist das, was meine Musik bewegt...

Why is this not OK? If I was going to give a hitherto unacknowledged period of Austrian architecture its own designation – and the building was erected at the end of the First World War – then I might be tempted to call it post Great War architecture. After all, nobody knew there would be another world war; certainly not straight after the 1914 – 1918 war.
Nevertheless, once a bad translator gets going, there’s no stopping him/her. In itself, the sentence: “What had been intrinsic from time immemorial was extraverted seven years later”, has a special literary magic all of its own…, …if it weren’t for the fact that ‘TIME IMMEMORIAL’ – according to the 2nd definition listed in the Collins online dictionary – suggests a period: ‘…beyond legal memory, fixed by statute as prior to 1189, the beginning of the reign of Richard I’.

Again, I struggle to picture a steam room and indoor swimming pool with a lawn and sun terrace; just as much as I struggle to imagine any other type of lawn than a grass one. Nor is it necessary to give every feature a function, since pools are nearly always for swimming in, and patios do tend to be exposed to the sun, generally etc. A work of mild genius.

There’s more to good translation – than translation!
No matter how good a translator you may be, you will also be held accountable for the intellectual poverty of the source copy.

I question the following:
1) Do flowers and plants sleep? OK, in a literal sense, no – but literarily (yes, that's deliberate), we can let this one go. They sort of drive down for the winter, which is like what we do at night. So maybe.
2) At the onset of winter, some birds migrate to warmer climes – others stick it out. Most animals don‘t go anywhere. They hibernate or they hunt through the winter, but they don‘t go away. So is it strictly correct to say they ‘return’? Clumsy.
3) Listen, when the spring sun brings new life, it’s to OUR world – but not to THE world. While in the northern hemisphere we whinge about the cold, in the southern hemisphere they’re moaning about the heat!

Lazy. Try harder. Much harder!
