The idea that learning a foreign language starts with learning grammar is mistaken. I think
several generations of language learners had negative experiences regarding
English/German/French lessons in school or (even university) when they had to translate
texts and do endless grammar exercises. In the last two decades, the approach to teaching
and learning a foreign language has dramatically changed because research has shown that
grammar is subordinate to lexis.
