Overview & Learning Outcome

The world is struggling with complex & multifaceted “wicked”/“pocket” crises (e.g., poverty & inequalities, food insecurity) & "black swan" (e.g., unforeseen future events) to geopolitical tensions, bad governance, human rights abuses, & environmental issues. In such turbulence & precarious times, the need for robust/rigorous evidence & informed decision-making has never been more crucial. We must think critically & navigate our research & policies towards solutions that prioritize real-world agenda-setting for the common good, or the public interest.

To meet this imperative, this workshop aims to empower participants (e.g., graduate students, PhD/DBA candidates, postdocs, research staff, civil society representatives, NGOs, or everyone involved in shaping informed policy decision making) with rigorous research and data skills to understand "Evidence/informed-Based Policy (Making) and Research" and navigate the complex policy landscape effectively. Throughout the workshop, participants will explore advanced research methodologies, statistical/textual data analysis techniques, and learn to synthesize empirical evidence to inform policy decisions effectively

🎯LEARNING OUTCOMES, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES

Too often, we complain about how the African Union, government, and public authorities are not functioning well, making decisions, and governing our affairs, relying solely on hierarchies that are failing hopelessly, and we are often right. This problem affects mankind and has triggered uncontrollable societal changes, as dangerous “pocket” conflicts and tensions arise. No wonder that public policy is gradually developing governance tools and new approaches to collectively shape societies, economies, the environment, public health, medicine, & political systems, while influencing policy outcomes and citizens' lives in complex environments for the common good.

Whether you are an early or established career researcher, student, CSO/NGO representative, or policy advocate, this workshop aims to equip participants with knowledge, skills, and competencies to critically reflect and gain insights into the theoretical, empirical, methodological, and practical frameworks of governance in public policy and navigate the complexities of new governance approaches across different public policy-related fields.
By the end, participants will be able to develop a toolbox for their governance and public policy-related field projects, thesis, or dissertation writing in real-world pan-African and beyond agendas for the common good or public interests.

Stop Losing Marks in Academic Writing: Descriptive vs Analytical vs Critical Explained

Most students don’t realize this… until they lose marks.

A student once submitted a “perfectly written” paper - clear, structured, well-researched. Still, the grade was disappointing. Why? It was descriptive, not analytical.

Here’s the shift universities expect:
Descriptive writing tells the WHAT - facts, events, theories.
Analytical (critical) writing answers the SO WHAT - why it matters, what it means, and how it connects to your research.

That’s the difference between average and top grades.

But here’s the debate:
Is strong writing about explaining more… or thinking deeper?

Top students do one thing differently:
For every point, they ask “So what?” - and link it back to their research aims.

That’s where marks are earned.
