Professional Development for Teachers in the Use of iPads for Education

Course Title:
Using iPads in mathematics and science classes in high schools


Target Audience

• Teachers in Mathematics, Science, and teacher trainers in secondary/vocational education.

• Teachers of IT who wish to improve their knowledge in the use of iPads.

Institution Organizing the Course

The course will be held at the University of Graz, Institute of Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Center of Education, Heinrichstrasse 36, 8010 Graz. Prof. Bernd Thaller is the head of the center of education. The course language is English.

Participants are expected to be able to communicate using English language.

The trainer is Reinhard Simonovits, PhD in Theoretical Physics, Mathematics teacher at Handelsakademie Grazbachgasse, lecturer at Karl-Franzens University, instructor for iPads in maths classes.

Course Preparation

All participants are expected to bring their own laptop, iPad and smartphone.

System Requirement(s):

Laptop: Operating System Windows 8 or higher, Yosemite OS X 10.10 or higher, Microsoft Office 2013 or higher

iPad: Version 4.0, Air 1, Air 2, Pro. (Version 2.0, 3.0 are proven not to work on this course).

Smartphone: iPhones 5 and higher. Android phones with operating system 5.0 or higher.

Requirement for software skills:

• Zip and Unzip files.
• Bookmark pages.
• Download files to a given folder.

It is a given requirement for participants to have these basic computer skills, so you can fully participate in the course.

Course Objectives

a) Practical work with apps on iPads.

b) Projector software AirServer and AppleTV.

c) OneNote – to capture thoughts, ideas and material for students.

d) OneDrive - online storage for sharing material with students.

e) Practical apps – OfficeLens, Safari, GoodReader, Edmodo.

f) Mathematical apps: Wolfram Alpha, Geogebra.

g) Pedagogy: what you should do/not do when teaching with iPads.

h) Discussion of a possible Erasmus+ project between schools.

Travel Arrangements

Graz has an airport. If you arrive in Vienna: the train journey to Graz takes about 2.5 hours.
If possible, please, plan your flights so that you can make it to the welcome dinner. Additional information on accommodation and points of interest in Graz and Styria will be given via e-mail.
