Our Story
Wayland Baptist University was founded in 1908 by Dr. James Henry Wayland, a pioneer physician who understood the importance of education -- specifically, an education grounded in faith. He donated $10,000 and 25 acres of prime real estate to establish the school.
Since that initial gift, Wayland has continued to grow and now operates 14 locations in six states and offers a full degree program in Kenya, Africa. Campus locations include Plainview, Lubbock, Amarillo, Wichita Falls and San Antonio, Texas; Clovis and Albuquerque, N.M.; Altus, Okla.; Phoenix and Sierra Vista, Arizona; Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska; Hawaii; and American Samoa. Many of Wayland’s external campuses are affiliated with military bases.
Wayland has a rich history that includes its involvement in military education. The school was also the first college or university in the former Confederate South to voluntarily integrated, and Wayland was a pioneer in the field of women’s athletics.
Wayland opens its doors to American Samoa in May 2018. Students can earn associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Business Administration, Justice Administration, Human Services, Management, Counseling, Education, Christian Ministry and Public Administration for both online and face to face.
