Letter to Every Teacher
Dear Colleague,
Still On The Matter.
It is a deep sign of disrespect, disregard, and dishonour when a student, parent, or anyone raises a hand to assault a teacher.
Whenever I see such incidents, I ask myself:
Why would anyone dare to despise or dishonour such a noble profession?
While some people simply lack value for educators, we must also acknowledge that certain factors influence how parents perceive teachers.
Respect is earned, yes! but it is also shaped by the image we consistently project.
Here Are Ten Reasons Why Some Parents Don’t Respect Teachers :
1. The way some school owners present their teachers to parents.
When school owners belittle teachers, speak to them disrespectfully, or treat them as replaceable, parents begin to see teachers as insignificant. Leadership determines perception.
2. Inadequate knowledge of subject matter.
A teacher who struggles to explain concepts, makes frequent errors, or lacks mastery may lose credibility even from their scholars. Parents expect competence, not confusion.
3. Shabby or unprofessional appearance:
Dressing carelessly, being unkempt, or looking disorganized affects how both your scholars and parents view your level of seriousness and professionalism. Appearance is a silent yet a loud message.
4 . Too much familiarity with parents:
Over-familiarity breeds contempt. Constant chatting, unnecessary closeness, or trying to be a “friend” can weaken boundaries and diminish authority.
5. Poor communication skills : Teachers who cannot speak confidently, articulate clearly, or write properly may be perceived as incompetent. "Communication influences respect".
6. Inability to maintain classroom discipline:
A teacher who cannot control their class gives parents the impression of weakness or lack of leadership. Discipline equals authority.
7. Unprofessional conduct on or off school premises:
Gossiping, lateness, unpreparedness, posting inappropriate content online, or behaving
