e greatest Armenian poet-composer, Sayat-Nova. In the next few years, a string ensemble and a department of wind instruments were added. These were followed by the introduction of music composition curriculum headed by the composers Edgar Hovhannisyan, Aram Satyan and others. The school choir and the violin ensemble were established in 1970. The leadership of notable conductors and musicians such as Yuri Davtyan, Gohar Harutiunyan, Gevorg Achemyan, Ruben Altunyan, Hovhannes Veranyan, Artur Veranyan, Gayane Baghdasaryan, Nairi Bardakchyan, Sergey Khachatryan and others has brought prominence to the ensembles. Over 75 years Sayat-Nova School of Music has produced 5000 graduates including celebrated musicians, artists, laureates of international contests such as Svetlana Navasardyan, Barsegh Tumanyan, Hasmik Papyan, Tigran Hekekyan, Sergey Babayan, Susanna Martirosyan, Karine Ohanyan, Emin Aristakesyan, Gagik Hovunts, Konstantin Petrossian, Vardan Achemyan, Yuri Galstyan, Svetlana Aleksanyan, Davit Azaryan, Yuri Davtyan, Eduard Topchyan, Ruben Matevosyan, Raisa Mkrtchyan. Professor Tigran Hekekyan has served as the school headmaster since 2003. Under his leadership Sayat-Nova School of Music has grown and expanded its performing ensembles and choirs. Today with over 500 students, the school has a functioning symphonic orchestra (conductor Ruben Asatryan), ensemble of traditional instruments (conductor Narine Zakaryan), wind orchestra (conductor Hakob Safaryan), violin ensemble, percussion ensemble, and choirs of secondary, intermediate and high school levels (choirmasters LIlit Adzhamoghlyan, Maria Galstyan); and departments of piano, string, traditional, wind, and percussion instruments.
