💡 Money allocated in a budget isn’t always available in the bank. That’s why cash flow planning matters: knowing when funds will be available and when payments are due helps avoid delays and keeps project activities on track.

At Shams, we assess our financial management practices at least once a year to identify our strengths and areas for improvement.

The final day of the “Human Rights & Civic Leadership” camp focused on what comes next: engagement with state institutions, the development of an Advisory Group, and turning participants’ ideas into concrete advocacy priorities.

Participants identified several key areas for future work, including improving Yezidi language education, preventing domestic violence and the abduction of Yezidi girls, addressing transportation and education challenges in Metsadzor and Arevut, and preserving Yezidi culture, language, and religion.

The day concluded with the certification ceremony, marking the end of five days of learning and joint work, and the beginning of continued engagement.

What does it take for a young person not only to have an opinion, but also to be able to formulate it clearly, present it, and stand by it?

The fourth day of the “Human Rights and Civic Leadership” camp focused on exactly this question.

Together with participants, we worked on leadership, public speaking, and teamwork skills, while also discussing the role Yezidi young people can play in community and public life when they have the confidence, knowledge, and tools to make their voices heard.

An important part of the day was not only discussing leadership, but also putting it into practice: articulating an idea, presenting a position, working as a team, and listening to others.

Another important part of the day was the screening and discussion of the film “Congratulations, It’s a Girl,” with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Armenia.

The film created space to discuss girls’ and women’s choices, education, independent decision-making, and the social constraints that can affect their opportunities and future decisions.

At the end of the day, one important question remained with us: If young people and women express their views, are we also creating an environment where those voices can have an impact?

What does peace mean to us? How is security experienced in the everyday life of a community? And how can a citizen bring a concern to those who make decisions?

These were some of the key questions explored on the third day of our “Human Rights and Civic Leadership” camp.

Together with participants, we discussed peace and security through the experience of the Yezidi community, reflected on the foundations of democracy and public governance, and explored the role that legislation and parliamentary offices can play in addressing citizens’ concerns.

An important part of the day was the group work. Participants looked at challenges in their communities and began thinking about how these could be translated into legislative or policy proposals.

The discussions touched on education, preservation of the Yezidi language and history, the creation of cultural centers, support for students, prevention of early and forced marriage, community infrastructure, legal awareness, and women’s participation in public life.

For us, Day 3 was about exactly this: understanding the problem, identifying who can address it, and learning how to formulate a proposal of your own.

From the discussions held during our “Human Rights and Civic Leadership” training camp, we would like to highlight one important thought: participation is often encouraged, but achieving real influence is much more difficult.

For Yezidi women and youth, meaningful participation should not be limited to simply being invited to discussions. It should also create real opportunities to voice priorities, contribute to policy dialogue, and take part in decision-making processes that directly affect the community.

What needs to change for participation to become real influence?

This is one of the key questions that continues to guide our work and our next steps.
