ÇETA
Between January and March of 2016, a group of students, activists, and artists began to discuss the formation of a group to oppose the hegemonic structures of capitalist and neoliberal politics and economics in contemporary Albania. From these discussions, a group of street artists—individually anonymous but known collectively as Çeta—emerged. The group takes its name from the word used to describe the groups of antifascist guerilla fighters active in the Balkans during the Second World War, and its mission is to use street art as a weapon—however modest—in a broader struggle against neoliberal policies dominating Albanian universities, against the destruction of Tirana’s few remaining green spaces, and in favor of free public transportation. Functioning as a true collective, the group is made up of members of various ages, with various backgrounds: designers, political scientists, artists, architects.
