🦅 Porrocaecum Infection in Birds (Avian Nematode)

Porrocaecum is a large intestinal roundworm commonly affecting birds, especially raptors and wild birds.

🔬 Site of infection: Small intestine
🔄 Transmission: Ingestion of infected intermediate hosts (earthworms / arthropods)

⚠️ Clinical impact:
• Weight loss
• Poor appetite
• Diarrhea
• Weakness
• Reduced flight performance in raptors
• Severe cases may cause intestinal obstruction

🧪 Diagnosis:
• F***l examination – thick-shelled ascarid eggs
• Post-mortem – large white worms in intestine

💊 Management:
Early diagnosis and appropriate anthelmintic treatment are essential to prevent complications and secondary infections.

🛡️ Prevention:
Regular f***l screening, proper hygiene, and safe feeding practices are key to controlling parasitic infections in captive birds.

"Recurrent Candida infection in falcons is rarely a primary disease. It is a sign of underlying stress, antibiotic misuse, crop damage, or immune suppression. Treat the cause—not just the yeast.”

Mixed bacterial infection in raptors 🦅

Culture plates showing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli isolated from crop samples of a raptor.
🔬 This bird had a primary Trichomonas infection, which likely predisposed it to secondary bacterial overgrowth.

➡️ Key point:
Primary parasitic infections like Trichomoniasis damage the mucosa, allowing opportunistic bacteria to colonize and cause severe mixed infections.

✅ Early diagnosis
✅ Combined parasitological & bacteriological screening
✅ Targeted treatment

are essential for successful management of raptor infections.

Severe coccidiosis is a serious intestinal disease in raptors caused by coccidian protozoa.
Heavy infection leads to damage of the intestinal lining, resulting in diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, weakness, and poor performance.

In advanced cases, large numbers of oocysts can be detected during microscopic f***l examination, indicating high parasite load.
Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are critical to prevent mortality, especially in captive and young birds.

🔬 Routine f***l screening plays a key role in disease prevention
