You can stay within the daily loss limit and still fail a prop firm challenge.

Why?

Because maximum overall loss measures the total drawdown your account can absorb across the entire evaluation.

Example:

Starting balance: $10,000
Maximum overall loss: 10%
Maximum allowed drawdown: $1,000
Minimum account threshold: $9,000

Now imagine:

πŸ“‰ Day 1: –$250
πŸ“‰ Day 2: –$300
πŸ“‰ Day 3: –$200
πŸ“‰ Floating loss: –$180
πŸ’³ Commissions, swaps, and costs: –$70

Total impact: –$1,000

There was no single catastrophic trading day.

But the accumulated drawdown still reached the maximum overall loss threshold.

This is why professional traders do not only ask:

β€œHow much can I risk today?”

They also ask:

β€œHow much drawdown can my account still absorb?”

**Daily loss protects you from one bad day.
Maximum overall loss protects you from accumulated damage.**

Monitor your remaining drawdown.
Keep your risk controlled.
Protect the account before the limit becomes a problem.

Why? Because your equity may include more than your closed results.

Example:

Starting account: $10,000

❌ Closed losses: –$200
πŸ“‰ Floating losses: –$180
πŸ’³ Commissions and trading costs: –$20

Total daily impact: –$400

Your balance shows what has already happened.

Your equity shows what is happening right now.

This is why professional traders monitor:

βœ… Closed losses
βœ… Floating losses
βœ… Commissions
βœ… Swaps
βœ… Remaining available risk

Do not wait until the daily loss limit is almost reached before reducing your exposure.

Track your equityβ€”not only your closed trades.
Protect your daily loss limit and stay within the rules.

A strong trading setup can still damage your account if your position size is too large.

Position sizing determines how much you could lose if the market reaches your stop loss.

To calculate it correctly, consider:

βœ… Your account balance
βœ… Your chosen risk percentage
βœ… Your stop-loss distance

Example:

Account balance: $10,000
Risk per trade: 1%
Maximum risk: $100

Your position size should then be adjusted so that, if the stop loss is reached, the loss remains within that $100 limit.

A wider stop loss requires a smaller position.
A tighter stop loss may allow a larger position.

But the total risk should remain controlled.

Choose your risk first.
Calculate your position size second.
Enter the trade last.

You don’t need to win every trade to become profitable.

What matters is how much you risk compared to how much you could potentially gain.

For example, risking $100 to target $200 gives you a 1:2 risk-to-reward ratio.

Across 10 trades:

βœ… 4 wins Γ— $200 = $800
❌ 6 losses Γ— $100 = $600

Final result: +$200

Even with only a 40% win rate, the trader remains profitable because the winning trades are larger than the losses.

Professional traders focus on controlling downside, protecting capital, and making sure their winners matter.

Your win rate tells you how often you are right.
Your risk-to-reward ratio determines how much being right is worth.
