Prof. John Akec says University of Juba tuition unchanged, points to exchange rate

Tuition fees at the University of Juba have not been increased, Vice Chancellor John Akec has said, attributing the higher amounts students are paying to the weakening South Sudanese pound.

Akec stated that the fee structure remains the same as approved in 2022. However, the exchange rate has shifted from SSP 3,000 per US dollar in the 2024/2025 academic year to about SSP 5,500 in 2025/2026.

This change has raised the cost in local currency, even though the base tuition has not changed.

The statement follows public concern from students and families who have reported increased financial pressure. Some have questioned whether the higher cost will be matched by improvements in teaching quality, facilities, and learning conditions at the university.

Students from the Department of Agricultural Science gathered to take a group photo on their sign-out day in honor of their late colleague, Mark Aleu Mach Makoor.

They had hoped to complete their studies together, celebrate their achievement and begin the next stage of life side by side. Sadly, that special moment came without him, which made the day both meaningful and painful. To them, Mark was not just a classmate but a true friend and like a brother.

As they took the photo, they held his T-shirt to show that he was still part of their journey. Even though he is no longer with them physically, his kindness, friendship and dreams remain alive in their hearts.
They promised to always remember him and the memories they shared.

They also prayed that God grants him eternal rest. Mark Aleu will always be remembered and never forgotten.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “We need this money to be able to operate; it is the only thing we depend on—for maintenance, infrastructure development, and our daily operations. A significant number of students had paid nothing or only half their installments. They were sorted out and signed an undertaking that they will pay. At Customs, the processing was very slow, so there was a buildup, not tension.” ~ Prof. John Akec, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Juba.
