Rule number one for any leader facing a crisis. Keep your head and stay calm. If the leader loses their composure, uncertainty spreads instantly through the team.

Stay calm, analyse the problem, and you will get through it.

In the military, they test your leadership by introducing total chaos. You are tired, covered in dirt, and the instructors are screaming at you while simulating absolute disaster.

Does your corporate team have the operational structure to survive a high-pressure crisis, or do they fold when things get tough?

Have you ever asked an innocent question at work, only to discover it painted a target on your back?

In my latest video, I share a raw story from my officer training where a simple misunderstanding almost got me kicked out of Duntroon.

Despite a disastrous report from my instructor, my section anonymously ranked me #1 to lead them into war during a peer evaluation.

This taught me a massive lesson. Good intentions do not equal good impact. Two people can hear the exact same words and walk away with completely opposite conclusions.

As business owners, we can't just communicate; we have to ensure we are being received correctly.

You are capable of far more than you realise.

Sometimes, you just need to be put in a situation where giving up isn't an option.

What challenge taught you the most about yourself?

Duntroon taught me more about leadership than a classroom ever will. Theoretical business management degrees can prepare you for normal operational days, but they fail to build the baseline capability needed during high-pressure crises.

True ex*****on is built through world-class standard systems and operational discipline.

One of the biggest leadership lessons I learned in the Army had nothing to do with tactics. It had everything to do with people.

During my time at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, I found myself exhausted, under pressure, and forced to make decisions with very little information. Looking back, those experiences shaped the way I lead today far more than any textbook ever could.

Human beings are capable of far more than they realise. When things become difficult, it's easy to think you've reached your limit.

More often than not, you are simply discovering what you're capable of.

Most business owners are either ignoring AI or trying to do too much, too soon.

Here's a simpler way to think about it.

There are three levels of AI:
🔹 Level 1: AI helps your people become more productive.
🔹 Level 2: AI agents become part of your team.
🔹 Level 3: Businesses built entirely around AI.

If I were advising a business owner today, I'd start with Level 1.
Train your team.
Make AI part of everyday work.
Build confidence before chasing the latest trend.
The businesses that adapt will have a huge advantage over those that don't.

AI isn't coming.
It's already here.

Follow for practical leadership and business advice that works in the real world.

I don't believe people need another motivational speaker.

They need someone who's built businesses, led teams and knows what leadership looks like when the stakes are real.

I've led in the military, business and the not-for-profit sector, and I've learned that leadership isn't about rank, titles or theory.

It's about people.

That's the message I take to every conference and leadership event I speak at.

If you're planning an event and you're looking for practical leadership your audience can actually use, take a look at my speaker showreel below.

If you think I'm the right fit, let's have a conversation.

Leadership is knowing when to step away from the empire you built.

A few years into launching the Military Cadets—which had grown from a blank piece of paper to 7 units and hundreds of kids—my life experienced a massive personal and professional collapse.

Within a single 12-month window:
- My mother passed away.
- I suffered a severe nervous breakdown.
- Key business relationships turned toxic, with people attempting to bypass agreements and default on payments.
- I had to pour immense personal energy into supporting a wayward family member who deeply needed guidance.

Something had to break. I realised that if I forced myself to remain at the helm of every single initiative out of sheer pride, I would destroy my health and damage the very organisation I loved.
I resigned as President and initiated a complete handover process to our members. Because our operational foundation was clear, structured, and decoupled from my solo presence, the organisation survived the transition beautifully. Three units were integrated into fully-funded federal frameworks, and four remained completely independent, self-sufficient entities.

As a CEO, founder, or entrepreneur, your ultimate strategic metric isn't how hard you work when you're in the building. It’s how efficiently your team executes when life forces you to step completely outside of it.

If you are currently bogged down in daily firefighting and operational chaos, you don't have a personnel issue—you have a systemic architecture issue.
