Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Vetoes Mail Voting Photo ID Bill

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has vetoed a Republican-backed bill that would have required voters to present a photo ID when casting ballots by mail.

House Bill 472 sought to expand Ohio’s existing voter ID law, which has required photo identification for in-person voting since 2023. In his veto message, DeWine argued the new requirement was unnecessary, saying Ohio already conducts secure and efficient elections.

“This bill is not needed, because Ohio does an excellent job running elections,” DeWine said. “We know who wins on election night and not weeks later!”

The governor also cited concerns from bipartisan election officials and AARP, who argued the measure was rushed through the legislature and could create unnecessary barriers for eligible voters without improving election security.

The veto keeps Ohio’s current mail voting rules in place unless lawmakers attempt to override the governor’s decision.
