2 Minute School Ready Skill
Big emotions are part of early childhood.
Frustration, excitement, anger and being overwhelmed these are not behaviours to fix, but emotions to guide.
One simple way to support your child in the moment is through co-regulation, helping them calm their body before expecting them to manage their feelings.
This “balloon breathing” technique is something you can try together:
1. Breathe in slowly through the nose
2. Feel the tummy grow like a balloon
3. Then slowly breathe out through the mouth.
Sounds simple but so effective.
Self-regulation is a vital part of school readiness. It supports your child to manage transitions, focus and cope with the everyday expectations of a classroom. These skills don’t develop on their own they are learned through role modeling and adult support.
If you’re looking for more simple, practical ways to support your child’s development and school readiness, you can sign up to our Little Thinkers Club for guidance, activities and support.
Save this for later and try it together 🤍

Big feelings can look overwhelming in young children. The tears, the shouting, the sudden frustration, it can sometimes feel like misbehaviour. But in the early years, children are still learning what emotions actually feel like.
Right now in the UAE, schools and nurseries closed earlier than expected and we’ve moved straight into half-term. While half-term is something children normally look forward to, this one may feel a little different.
Our usual plans might look slightly different too. Our plans to spend more time at the parks being outdoors before the heat picks up or simply finding new ways to keep children busy and settled at home.
And when the rhythm of their day changes children often feel it even if they can’t fully explain why. So when a child cries, shouts or melts down, they are often not trying to be difficult. They are trying to express something they don’t yet have the words to explain.
“ I am personally am seeing this at home at the moment. My daughter is four and lately she has become more expressive every day, sometimes with bigger words, sometimes with very big tears or display more frustration.
And if I’m honest, some of those moments have tested my patience too. But they also remind me that while we’re all trying to make sense of what’s happening around us, our children are doing the same.
They’re not only trying to understand the world right now they’re also learning to understand their own feelings within it. And during times like this, a little more patience, listening and extra cuddle is more than enough’’.

If you follow Think Nursery, you’ll notice changes are coming.
We talk a lot about raising standards, supporting families and strengthening early years practice. But behind everything we share are five simple values that guide how we work. Because early years isn’t just about advice or resources it’s about people.
Parents looking for reassurance. Educators doing an incredibly important job every day. Leaders trying to build strong, supportive environments for their teams and children.
So when we say THINK, this is what we mean.
We believe in ‘trust and transparency’ clear guidance, honest conversations and realistic support.
We believe in ‘high standards’ because every child deserves a strong start in life.
We focus on ‘impact, not just content’ practical ideas and real improvements that make a difference.
We believe in ‘nurturing every voice’ families, educators, leaders and children all matter.
And we believe in ‘knowledge that keeps growing’ because early years practice should always evolve.
If you’re here as a parent, educator or nursery leader, you’re already part of this conversation. And together, we can keep raising the standard of early years.

Raising standards in early years isn’t about pointing out what’s wrong.
It’s about helping nurseries see clearly, strengthening what’s already working and supporting teams to keep improving. Behind every well-run nursery is a team that cares deeply about the children in their care. But even the most dedicated teams benefit from guidance, reflection and an outside perspective.
That’s where meaningful improvement begins. Not through criticism but through clarity, support and continuous development.
Because when nurseries feel supported, educators feel confident and children benefit the most.
At Think Nursery, we work alongside nurseries to support quality, strengthen practice and help teams keep moving forward.

Parents often ask us the same things…
“Am I doing this right?”
“Is my child developing the way they should?”
“How do I choose the right nursery?”
The truth is, it’s completely normal to feel that way. There is so much information out there and it’s not always easy to know what really matters for your child. At Think Nursery, we created this space to support parents through those early years.
Sometimes that means helping families navigate the nursery search and understand what to look for when choosing the right environment for their child. Other times it means sharing simple guidance and ideas that help you support your child’s confidence, communication and independence at home. Because the early years are not just about preparing for school. They’re about helping children feel secure, curious and capable as they grow.
If you’re raising a little one and trying to make sense of these early years, you’re not alone. We’re here to support you along the way follow to keep up to date.
Share something you may need support with during your parenting journey right now (Finding the right nursery, sleep, behaviour or something else etc)?

Running a nursery is one of the most demanding leadership roles in education. Behind every classroom experience is a leader balancing operations, compliance, staff development, parent communication and quality standards often all at once.
Most leaders step into the role because they care deeply about children and early learning. But the reality is that leadership in early years requires far more than passion alone. It requires structure, systems and ongoing professional support.
That’s where Think Nursery comes in. We work alongside nursery leaders to help strengthen the foundations that keep a setting running well every day:
• Operational systems
• Team development and leadership confidence
• Compliance and inspection readiness
• Quality improvement across the learning environment
Our goal isn’t to add more pressure. It’s to provide clarity, guidance and practical solutions so leaders can focus on what matters most, creating environments where children, educators and families thrive.
Because when leadership is supported, the entire setting becomes stronger. When nurseries are stronger, children receive the quality early experiences they deserve.
If you’re a nursery leader looking to strengthen your setting and move forward with confidence, Think Nursery is here to support you. Visit ThinkNursery.com to find out more.

Between the ages of 3–5, children are learning to turn their thoughts into words, follow instructions and hold conversations and this is the stage that sits behind the statistic that 1 in 4 children start school with a speech and language delay.
It’s a reminder of how many children need more time and support in this area and why recognising it early makes such a difference to their self confidence, social skills and their transition into school.
As experts, we are looking out for a child who finds it harder to:
• follow simple instructions such as “Go and get your shoes” or “Find your coat and bring it to me”
• answer questions like “Who did you play with today?” or “What did you build in the block area?”
• express their needs “I’m thirsty”, “Can you help me?”, “I feel sad”
• listen to a short story and recall what happened
• take turns in a conversation and stay engaged
You can support this at home through small, playful routines:
⚽️ Turn-taking games — roll a ball to each other. When your child is holding the ball, it’s their turn to talk.
This represents the flow of conversation and teaches my turn → your turn.
📖 Make story time part of your daily routine and talk about the pictures together: “What can you see?” “What’s happening?”
This builds vocabulary, understanding and the ability to sequence and retell.
🎵 Repeat favourite songs and rhymes and pause before the key word.
This supports listening, processing time and confidence to join in with words.
💬 Back-and-forth conversations in everyday moments for example at mealtimes, in the bath or in the car.
These shared exchanges develop attention, comprehension and longer sentences.
These small, consistent moments make a powerful difference.
