BECB SHIFTLead™ Executive Leadership Programme is an 8-week transformational journey for current and aspiring leaders who want to grow in confidence, clarity and impact.

We’ll soon be introducing our experienced and dedicated facilitators who are currently serving in various leadership positions across education. They won’t just facilitate the programme; they’ll also mentor our participants throughout the journey.

A child reminded me of one of the greatest lessons about leadership.

A few days ago, a child whose behaviour I sometimes have to address saw me from a distance.

I expected him to walk past.

Instead, he ran towards me and gave me the tightest hug.

Then it happened again on another day.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

It reminded me that people don’t just remember the feedback you give them. They remember how you made them feel while receiving it.

I’m not afraid to address behaviour when it’s necessary. In fact, I believe it’s part of helping a child grow. But I also believe those moments should never leave a child questioning whether they are loved, valued, or believed in.

So I explain.

I listen.

I reassure.

I make it clear that I’m addressing the behaviour—not the child’s worth.

The more I reflected, the more I realised this isn’t just about children.

It’s about leadership.

Whether you’re leading a child, a team, or an organisation, people are far more receptive to feedback and accountability when they know it comes from someone who genuinely wants to see them grow.

Anyone can use authority to gain compliance.

But trust?

Trust is earned through consistency, respect, empathy, and genuine care.

That little hug reminded me that the most influential leaders aren’t the ones people fear.

They’re the ones people trust enough to keep coming back to.

So here’s my question:

When people leave a conversation with you, do they feel diminished… or developed?
