Twenty-one thousand hours with teachers, classmates, support staff and school leaders. That’s why, when choosing a school, I look far beyond shiny buildings and impressive facilities. I look at the people.

This school is shiny and brand new, and just like its sister school Victory Heights Primary School who gained an outstanding rating from KHDA, it is a big hit with families.

This week I visited Victory Heights Primary School, a brand new school in City of Arabia. What struck me was the feeling. Victory Heights Primary School City Of Arabia
I asked a teacher how she was enjoying teaching there and she said the ethos and values of the school was like a warm hug every day.

I spoke to parents who spoke with complete confidence about the team. Again and again I heard the same message:

“No child goes unnoticed.”

Teachers knew names. Leaders knew families. Children were greeted warmly. There was a genuine sense of belonging.

TIPs:As an ex-nursery principal, I always give parents the same advice when visiting a school.

Hang back at the end of the tour for a moment. Watch what happens when the principal turns the corner. Are the teachers still smiling? Are the children still engaged? Do the classrooms feel joyful?

And look carefully at the environment.

I’m not a fan of classrooms that look like a showroom. Children deserve spaces that reflect them, their ideas, their artwork, their questions and their personalities.
School shouldn’t just be a place where children are told where to sit, when to stand, when to eat and when to move. It should be a place where they have ownership, autonomy and a voice.

One thing I particularly love about dedicated primary schools is that children get the chance to be the big fish in a small pond. Every teacher specialises in this stage of development. Every space, every decision and every opportunity is designed specifically for primary-aged children.

Confidence grows when children are known.

And when children are known, they flourish. 🌱
