How to blend - CVC Words
CVC words = Consonant-Vowel-Consonant
Like: `cat, dog, sun, pig, mop`
This is the next big step after CV blending! Hereβs the easiest way to teach it to weak students π
4 Steps to Blend CVC Words
1. Isolate the sounds
Hold up 3 fingers.
`c - a - t` β /k/ /a/ /t/
Donβt say "kuh-aaa-tuh". Say clean sounds: /k/ /a/ /t/
2. Slide them together
Use your finger to slide under the word as you stretch the sounds.
`c-a-t` β /kkkaaatt/ β "cat"
Think of it like pulling elastic - donβt stop between sounds.
3. Use body movements
Tap method:
Tap shoulder = /c/,
elbow = /a/,
wrist = /t/.
Oarm = "cat"
Jump method : Jump for each sound, then jump once and say the whole word
4. Picture + Word matching
Show picture of a `cat` β sound it out β blend β "cat!" Kids love the "aha!" moment
Teaching Order that Works
Start with continuous sounds first, they blend easier:
1. m, s, f, r, lβ `map, sun, fish, rug, lip`
2. Then add stops: `b, c, d, g, p, t` β `bat, dog, pig`
Quick Classroom Activities
- Sound Boxes: 3 boxes. Put a chip for each sound, then push chips together while blending
Blending Ladder: `a β at β cat`
CV to CVC :
From your CV chart: `ba` + `t` = `bat`

The "magic e" (also known as silent e or split digraph) is a phonics rule where adding an "e" to the end of a word changes the preceding vowel from a short sound to a long sound.
The "e" itself remains silent, acting only to alter the vowel sound.
How It WorksVowel Name: The "magic e" skips over a consonant, "telling" the vowel to say its alphabet name rather than its short sound.
Silence: The "e" uses all its energy to perform this magic, leaving it with no sound to make at the end of the word.
Common Examples
A-E: cap β cape, can β cane
I-E: pin β pine, kit β kite
O-E: hop β hope, rod β rode
U-E: cub β cube, cut β cute
