He says "I'm fine" — with fists clenched.

Kids this age don't always have the words for what they're feeling yet, but their face already does. Start with a mirror or a few playdough faces: happy, sad, angry, excited. What happens to the eyebrows? The mouth?

Once they can name the face, they can start naming the feeling.

How to Help Your Child Blend Sounds

Your child knows their letter sounds… but is finding it hard to put them together to read a word?

That next step is called blending.

Blending means joining individual sounds together to make a complete word.

For example:

/m/ + /æ/ + /t/ = mat

A simple way to practise at home:

1. Say each sound slowly and clearly.
2. Bring the sounds closer and closer together.
3. Say the whole word smoothly.

Try to avoid adding extra “uh” sounds in between.

So instead of:

“muh-a-tuh”

say:

“mmm-aaa-t” → “mat”

Keep it short and playful. Even a few minutes of blending practice can help children become more confident readers.
