My name is Danielle Blasl, and I am an audiologist currently working on my Masters study through the University of Cape Town. My study focuses on the perceptions of person-centred care in South African audiology patients. I am in need of the help of South African adults (18 years or older), who have consulted an audiologist within the last 3 months. Participation would involve answering a questionnaire, which will take less than 10 minutes. The questionnaire is available in English, Afrikaans and IsiXhosa. Click the link (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PARIUCT) to answer the questionnaire or contact me for a telephonic/paper-based survey. Sharing this message to other potential participants will be greatly appreciated.

The National Institute for the Deaf (NID) is a dynamic, non-profit organisation and the only facility in South Africa and Africa that provides the full continuum of services to the Deaf from the cradle to the grave.

For centuries the outcry of Deaf people all over the world has been "We can do anything but hear, so treat us as ‘normal’ human beings." This outcry led to the establishment of the Institute for the Deaf in 1881 in Worcester. NID is one of the oldest and largest constituency organisations and resource centres safeguarding and promoting the interests, human rights and wellbeing of Deaf people throughout South Africa and Africa.

UNMASKED!
A step in the right direction!

The National Institute for the Deaf (NID) celebrates 141 years of service to the Deaf and persons with hearing loss through several of its departments, each with their focus areas.

This year’s theme at NID is “Change for Improvement”. After careful consideration and numerous discussions, we have made a minor change for a major improvement.

The NID Integrated Support Services department is working on several projects: a South African Sign Language (SASL) video dictionary, an accredited online course, a literacy project for deaf children, and certification process for SASL interpreters. All these projects have to do with SASL. With this realisation, we are excited to announce that the name of this department will change to the "NID Sign Language Centre".

The NID Sign Language Centre (NID SLC) serves both the Deaf and the hearing communities by developing content, and by doing research in South African Sign Language (SASL). The aim of this department is to improve the lives of deaf South Africans by creating resources for anyone to learn SASL.

We look forward to the journey ahead.

Yesterday was World Down Syndrome Day 2022.

Some of our staff participated in the initiative
to create awareness by wearing colourful socks to the office today. Socks are the chosen symbol because chromosomes look a bit like colourful socks and people with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome 21.

At our NID Care department we also have one deaf resident with Down Syndrome. Sophia has been part of our NID family since 2009. Today we celebrate Sophia and her amazing growth and achievements at NID!

Meet your sign language interpreters

22/03/2022

Tune in to Daily Thetha SABC1 at 10:30 - 11:30 today. Andries van Niekerk (NID Chief Linguistic Officer) will be representing NID on the topic of Sign Language interpreting as a profession.

With over 4 million deaf and hard of hearing people, sign language interpreters ensure that there is a gateway to reaching deaf people while ensuring that they get the right access to information. SA sign language has its own grammar, vocabulary and syntax.

Today’s episode focuses on sign language interpreters in our country. We understand what the profession consists of & the challenges faced by sign language interpreters. Furthermore, we look at the opportunities that exist in the profession.

FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO - MESSAGE FOR 2022

At the National Institute for the Deaf (NID), we have kicked off the year with new energy and we are excited about everything that is planned for the year.

So many things have had to change over the last two years, but so much positive energy has been released through this difficult time that we have decided our theme for the new year is “Change for Improvement”

Change is inevitable, but we do not just want to make changes because we are obligated. We aim to make an improvement with each change. What are we improving? We want to improve our impact on our beneficiaries. Better care and better accessibility for all those who live with hearing loss. A better life for every Deaf person, a life with all the privileges that we as hearing take for granted.

We trust that all our loyal supporters will help us in our pursuit of this continuous improvement to the benefit of our beneficiaries, so that we can make life easier for them and help them achieve their full potential.

NID: Chief Executive Officer
